“Madam Secretary” Season 1 Episode 16 “Tamerlane” aired last Sunday, March 14, 2015 at 8:00 PM on CBS. In this episode, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni) raced against time to help prevent a coup from happening in Iran, which required her to covertly be in Iran on her daughter Alison’s (Kathrine Herzer) sixteenth birthday. Read on to learn more about this episode.
With CIA Director Andrew Munsey (Patrick Breen) under house arrest, and with agents tracking his every move while he was cut off from the outside world, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni), United States President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine) and his Chief of Staff, Russell Jackson (Zeljko Ivanek), had a window of seventy two hours to figure out what to do next about the fact that the late Secretary of State Vincent Marsh and Munsey had been plotting with an Iranian opposition leader in order to carry out a coup against the current regime. Because of this, Elizabeth called in her entire staff after informing her Chief of Staff, Nadine Tolliver (Bebe Neuwirth) about what happened, and after apologizing to her press coordinator, Daisy Grant (Patina Miller) regarding her secrecy about certain matters.
At the office, after being told that their former boss was a traitor, they helped narrow down the opposition leaders who would lead the coup to Jafar Alijaned (Nasser Faris), who had met with Munsey and Marsh, who had gone an “off the books” trip, in Jamaica. In the process, Nadine revealed that she and Marsh had had an affair for six years.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth bought some Laffy String as Laffy String battles were a birthday tradition, along with Dr. Henry McCord’s (Tim Daly) homemade pancakes, as Alison McCord’s (Kathrine Herzer) sixteenth birthday was two days away.
After informing the president of Alijaned’s involvement, Jackson and Elizabeth went to Canada, where Alijaned was currently living. They were instructed to vet him just in case Dalton decided to back the coup. However, Dalton decided to help prevent the coup from happening as Iran’s future leader, Alijaned only had two months to live as he had brain cancer.
Elizabeth then tried to get Munsey to talk but as that failed, she decided, much to Henry’s reluctance, to go to Iran to inform Zahed Javani (Usman Ally) about the coup. Henry was even more reluctant to let her go as she would only have a small security detail as she had to be there covertly to convince Iran that the United States wasn’t behind the coup to avoid war. The next morning, she apologized that she wouldn’t be there for Alison’s birthday, and bid her entire family goodbye, knowing full well that she might not see them again.
Meanwhile, because of Elizabeth’s visit, Munsey, as Elizabeth predicted, called up Juliet (Nilaja Sun) who was in Iran, that their operation, code named “Tamerlane”, was to be moved up. Jackson and the others weren’t able to catch what was said, but they correctly guessed what was going to happen, and the coordinates as to where in Iran the call was made to was sent to Elizabeth, who gave it to Javani so that he could warn President Najid Shiraz (Houshang Touzic).
The next morning, Elizabeth called to greet Alison a happy birthday, and spoke briefly with Henry. Afterwards, a bomb went off, and the entire house went under siege, killing Fred Cole (Dion Graham), the head of Elizabeth’s security detail, and Javani.
As soon as news of this reached the White House, the president ordered Admiral Ellin Hill (Johanna Day) to make sure a helicopter was ready for Elizabeth once she was located. They then informed Nadine, who informed Henry that they did not know if Elizabeth was still alive.
After storming the White House, and holding the president responsible for any harm done to Elizabeth, Henry was surprised to learn that both of his daughters knew exactly what was going on, and covered for them for Jason (Evan Roe) by having an impromptu Laffy String fight, even if the news showed footage of the ongoing coup.
Elizabeth, who had been injured, had been escorted to a safe bunker where she later on met Shiraz, who told her that the coup had been stopped thanks to her. He also told her that he still hoped for the peace talks between their two countries would still push through with the peace talks.
As soon as Jackson learned that Elizabeth was alive, he, on the president’s orders, set up an address to the nation in which the president informed the country of what had just happened, and paid his respects to Javani.
Nadine then informed an anxious staff that Elizabeth was alive, and she returned home to her family, who were all relieved and happy that she was back.
Later that night, Munsey shot himself, and Elizabeth received an email from Juliet, who wanted to turn herself in.
