Man Seeking Woman” Season 1 Episode 1 “Lizard” premiered on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at 10:30 p.m. on FXX. Dumped by his girlfriend of six years, Josh goes back to dating and realizes that plenty of things have changed. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.

Josh (Jay Baruchel) is packing his stuff. Maggie (Maya Erskine), his long-time girlfriend, has broken up with him, and now he’s moving in with his best friend Mike (Eric Andre). Mike tells him that this is a good thing, as he can start dating again. A lot of things has changed since then. There are dating apps now, and Mike proceeds to show him how this works as he picks a girl to date that night. Josh isn’t hopeful about his chances. He’s still heartbroken.

Later, he’s out with his sister Liz (Britt Lower), who actually sets Josh up with this Swedish girl, Gorbitchka, who turns out to be literally a troll. How come no one sees this? Because Josh is a nice guy, he proceeds with the date anyway, and it’s actually going fine. Until he mentions the dating app his friend is using and how he’s “trolling” the internet for girls. It drives Gorbitchka nuts, so she trashes the place and bites Josh’s leg. What a crazy first time back in the dating world!

At home, Josh receives a call from Maggie, who invites him to come over her place for a party. Josh thinks it’s an intimate gathering with a small group of friends, so he agrees to drop by. Besides, he really misses her, and he would like to update her about their shared pet lizard. But as it turns out, the party is for Maggie’s new beau: Hitler — Adolf Hitler. She’s dating the actual person responsible for the genocide of millions of Jews, and he’s 126 years old!

But Hitler, at his age, is surprisingly well-loved and funny. Yet Josh still cannot understand why his girlfriend is with him. His friend think he’s got issues with Hitler because he’s a Jew. He talks to Maggie about him, who can only say that they just happen to fall in love. Josh couldn’t take it, so he leaves the party and boards a train.

Only, the train is heading the opposite direction, but he rides it anyway because of Laura (Vanessa Bayer), the girl he meets at the station. They engage in pointless small talk during the ride, and he’s clearly smitten. When Laura gets off her stop, Josh makes the bold move to ask for her number and to ask her out.

Walking home this time, Josh receives a call on his phone. It’s some guy congratulating him for having the nerve to ask a girl out the traditional way. His act is so commendable that even President Obama calls him too to congratulate him! Crazy, right?

By the end of the episode, it’s pretty clear that this is not your usual romantic comedy series. “Man Seeking Woman” is very, very odd but really, really charming. Did you like the first episode? Did you get what the show is about?
