A late penalty scored by Robin Van Persie helped Manchester United defeat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday in the English Premier League. The match was emotional for both teams, as a player for Liverpool was given a red card and sent off for a hard challenge and Liverpool had to play the last 51 minutes with just 10 men.
Even after they were shorthanded, Liverpool managed to score the match’s first goal on a volley by Steven Gerrard. Nevertheless, Manchester United came right back with the equalizer by Rafael. Then just nine minutes before the match ended, Van Persie scored the winning goal from the spot.
Prior to the game, Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez shook hands in a sign of unity. Suarez, the Liverpool striker, had refused to shake the hand of Evra, the United defender when the two sides met last season in Manchester. Suarez had been suspended for nine games after he was found guilty of racial abuse against Evra last season.
The penalty against Liverpool came after Antonio Valencia, the Ecuadoran international raced 50 yards downfield with the ball before Glen Johnson was able to catch him. However, Johnson brought him down in the box and the penalty was awarded. Van Persie fired the goal home just out of the reach of a lunging Jose Reina in goal.
The win moved Manchester into second place in the league standings with 12 points, just one point behind league leader Chelsea, which defeated Stoke on Saturday by the score of 1-0.
