Mariah Carey, the singer will soon be confirmed as a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol. Contract negotiations are being completed. She is rumored to be negotiating a deal that will pay her $17 million for the upcoming season. If she signs such a contract, it will break the record held by Britney Spears who signed a deal to judge this season’s X Factor for $15 million.
Last week there was a shakeup of the Idol judges when both Steven Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith and Jennifer Lopez the actress and singer announced they would not return for the upcoming season. Immediately following the announcement, Carey’s name surfaced as potentially replacing one of the two exiting judges. However, Nick Cannon, her husband commented that the show might not have deep enough pockets to afford the singer.
Those worries can be forgotten as the show is amidst negotiations for the $17 million she was requesting. In 2010, Carey had been considered for a position as a judge when the show’s executives bypassed her for Lopez for a judge position for the show’s 10th season. If Carey is finally signed, the question is whom will she be sitting beside. The only remaining judge on the panel is Randy Jackson and it is still unknown whether he will return as well.
One possible new judge is the 70-year old Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. She sent an email that said she could judge and would like to bring along her pal Patti LeBelle to judge as well.
