“Marry Me” Season 1 Episode 4 “Annicurser-Me” aired on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. It’s the sixth anniversary of Annie and Jake’s first date. They celebrated this with their friends and Dennah’s British date, Liam. Read on for more in this recap below.
This sixth first date anniversary celebration was pretty special for Annie (Casey Wilson) and Jake (Ken Marino), as it will be their last before finally getting married. Kay (Tymberlee Hill) was grateful this was the case because she thought that their yearly “date-versaries” were kind of cursed.
In year five, Jake had an allergic attack to soy sauce. In their fourth date-versary, Annie was kicked on the face by a horse. Their third year first date celebration was spoiled by Jake’s truck, which burned. In their second first date anniversary, they failed to try the popular bread pudding in town, and just one year after their first date, they were drenched by the smoke alarm inside a restaurant.
Annie believed that their first date anniversary mishaps were only a string of unfortunate events. But Kay insisted that it’s cursed. Proving that, they all received an alarm on their phones: seek shelter as a storm is coming to Chicago. Cursed once again!
So, the gang all headed down to the basement with Gil (John Gemberling) leading the pack. He had an emergency kit stashed in Annie’s house.
Annie: Wait, Gil…you’re a doomsday prepper?
Gil: We prefer “survivalistas.”
This take-charge role Gil was exhibiting turned on Dennah (Sarah Wright), who liked her men like that. The girls reminded her that she’s with the nice British doctor Liam and that she shouldn’t ruin this by eyeing another guy.
Gil got down to business and showed pails to use as either a toilet, kitchen or the puke bucket. He also told them to look around for supplies, as they will be in there for a while. Kay spotted soy sauce, which Jake drank. But wasn’t he allergic to it?
Turned out, he wasn’t. He’s been keeping this a secret. That night during their fifth first date anniversary dinner, he only said he was allergic to soy sauce to distract Annie. She thought he was going to propose to her, but it wasn’t the right time yet.
All through the night, Annie came to discover that the events during their “cursed” first date anniversary celebrations were through the fault of someone else:
- The year she was kicked by the horse, Dennah was actually on the other end of that horse, trying to flirt with the cop who owned it.
- The year Jake’s truck burned, Gil put his homebrewed gasoline on it. Of course, it did not work!
- The year they planned to try out the best bread pudding in town, it turned out that the pudding was made with rat feces, according to Liam. It was a good thing they never got to taste it.
- And finally, the year with the smoke alarm…it turned out, Jake was first engaged to this crazy Asian bisexual Fantasia Yang before he met Annie. She was hung up on him years after they broke up, and she was the one who set the smoke alarm when she saw Jake with Annie.
Fantasia was the reason why Jake didn’t want Annie and Kay to open the drawer of his table in the storage basement. He had prenuptial papers there, which Annie thought was meant for her. How could she ever trust him with all these secrets?
Jake: Fantasia was real deal crazy. I mean, she proposed to me a month in and I knew it was wrong. So yes, yes…I got a prenup. Shortly followed by a restraining order.
Around this time, Annie was crawling by the vent, since she needed to open the storage locker from the other side, after Jake threw the keys when he didn’t want them to open his table drawer. As Annie was crawling, Jake tried to explain everything some more.
Annie: Wait…you picked me over a crazy hot bisexual chick? I mean, I beat out a Fantasia Yang?
Jake: Wait…you’re really not mad?
Annie: No, that means that I won! And that means that date-versary wasn’t cursed either…then
Jake: Then…none of them were. I faked an allergy, Dennah got you kicked by a horse, Gil blew up our car, the bread pudding was poison, Kay sickled the psycho on us.
Annie: The universe isn’t against our love. This proves once and for all there really isn’t a curse.

Meanwhile, Dennah did forget about Liam as Gil continued to take charge. She ended up kissing him, which offended Liam so he lashed out on them. But Dennah defended her friend from the British guy. In the end, however, Dennah realized this thing with Gil wasn’t supposed to go anywhere. She threatened to destroy him if word got out she kissed him.
