From time to time, MARVEL comics likes to shake things up by paying off ongoing storylines in a big comic book event that affects the entire MARVEL universe, such as the ongoing event, “Secret Wars”, whose current aftermath is giving birth to brand new storylines. However, fans shouldn’t get too attached to the new iterations of the new line as it seems that another “Civil War” event is on its way.
2006 was a big year for MARVEL comics as the comic book event, “Civil War,” was released that year.
“Civil War,” which caused not only the characters, but fans and the comic book creative teams to pick sides, saw an all-out war between the forces of Steve Rogers or Captain America and Iron Man or Tony Stark.
The two Avengers, and their forces, were pitted against each other in a war that started out due to a difference in opinion.
Due to several events that occurred prior to the event, the government, tired of superheroes not being held accountable to the damage that they often cause in the course of their heroics, came up with a Superhero Registration Act, which forced superheroes to register, to receive proper training, and to divulge their secret identities.
As Captain America and several other heroes disagreed with this, they went against Iron Man, S.H.I.E.L.D., and heroes who agreed that this had to be done.
This, of course, is also the basis for the upcoming movie, “Captain America: Civil War,” which managed to retain only the essence of the story, while changing some of the circumstances surrounding the event.
However, it seems that another massive comic book event is on its way, just right on the heels of the game-changing, and ongoing “Secret Wars” event, as the official website of MARVEL has just announced and confirmed that a “Civil War II” will be happening next year.
This doesn’t come as a big surprise, as MARVEL comics, in October of this year, sent out post cards teasing the event to comic book retail stores in the United States.
According to the Twitter account of comic book store owner Ryan Higgins, MARVEL sent him a postcard of Sam Wilson, the current Captain America, fighting Iron Man. On the back of the card, the roman numeral two was written on it, and it teased that this would be happening in the spring of 2016.
They also just announced that the creative team for the comic book event will be Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez, who are currently working together on the book “Invincible Iron Man.”
Not much is known yet about the event, except for the fact that the reason that the two heroes will be fighting each other will be completely different from the original; and that Bendis, in an exclusive interview with Comic Book Resources, mentioned that “no one will be safe” during and in the aftermath of the event.
Bendis is no stranger to creative big comic book events for MARVEL, as he wrote the “House of M” event as well as the more recent “Secret Invasion” storyline. He is also known for handling various runs of several iconic characters and teams in the MARVEL comics roster, such as Daredevil, and created the character of Jessica Jones, who currently has her own Netflix series.
