“MARVEL’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 2 Episode 10 “What They Become” aired last Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on ABC. In this episode, Agent Skye (Chloe Bennett) met her father who answered some questions regarding her true identity and destiny. Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. raced against time as they tried to destroy the city before HYDRA got the chance to figure out what the Obelisk or the Diviner really does. However, things became a little bit more complicated, and both Skye and Raina (Ruth Negga) discovered their own destinies inside the temple while another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was sacrificed. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode picked up from where it left off. Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) used some “fancy flying” in order to trick HYDRA and Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond) that they had succeeded in blowing up their plane. Afterwards, they flew towards San Juan so that she could inform S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) that HYDRA had kidnapped Agent Skye (Chloe Bennett).

At San Juan, Coulson instructed Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Leo Fitz (Iain de Castecker) to let him know when they figured out how they could get down to the tunnels in the underground city as soon as they could. Inside the bus, Coulson told May not to beat herself up about losing Skye to Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) and HYDRA. He knew that Ward was going to reunite her with her father (Kyle McLachlan), which meant that Skye would still be alive. Moreover, as May had trained her to become a good operative, Coulson knew that Skye could definitely take care of herself.

Inside the garage of the bus, which used to be Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie’s (Henry Simmons) work station, Agent Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse (Adrianne Palicki) fixed his things. Her ex-husband, Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), came to comfort her as she blamed herself for losing Mac and placed a thumbdrive into her pocket, which Hunter had noticed. She then asked for his help as back up, as she was going to pay a visit to her contact, Diego, so that they could make sure that HYDRA wouldn’t get to him and learn the entrance at the garrison.

Inside the bus, Agent Antoine “Trip” Triplett (B.J. Britt) and Agent Koenig (Patton Oswalt) plotted out the areas near the temple, where they would place mechanical bombs in order to destroy the temple so that HYDRA would not be able to use it.

Inside the interrogation room, Fitz and Simmons realized that the city might have infected Mac the way a particular fungus causes ants to become zombies. Based on this, they reasoned that Mac was now doing the will of the city, which means that there was still a chance to save him.

Ward then brought Skye in to meet her father.  He then introduced himself to her as Calvin Zabo and thanked her for coming. However, she couldn’t believe that her own father would resort to kidnapping just to reunite with her. After she called him a monster, he told her that he had only turned into one as she and her mother had been taken away from him.  He then told her that she had been born in China. He then became emotional and told her that he would protect her. However, after she asked him to get her out of there, he told her that she was exactly where she was supposed to be, as this was her destiny.

At San Juan, Bobbi and Hunter saw Diego meeting up with two HYDRA operatives. As they passed by them, Bobbi kissed Hunter so that they wouldn’t be recognized. She then opened up a piece of paper that Diego had slipped to her. She then informed Coulson that HYDRA was at the Ponce de Leon Theatre.

Back at the old theater, Cal explained that he had only teamed up with Whitehall, as it was the only way to find her. He then told her that one day, while they were working at their clinic in China, a group of men claiming to be S.H.I.E.L.D. took Skye’s mother away. He had then left Skye with people that he trusted so that he could try to find his wife. However, when he got to Europe, he found out that it was too late as Whitehall had used every part of her in order to make himself younger and then dumped the body. In order to comfort Skye, he then started humming a part of a lullaby — the song that had been playing when she dreamt that she was holding a music box. After he was told that Whitehall needed him, he reassured Skye that he was going to answer all of her questions, but he had to kill Whitehall first because of what he had done to Skye’s mother.

Back on the bus, the entire team geared up for their upcoming mission. Fitz and Simmons then handed out hazmat suits as they believed that if they wore it, they would not be detected by the city.  After learning from Bobbi that HYDRA was headed to the Ponce de Leon Theatre, they realized that HYDRA was going to drill right through the volcanic rock underneath it in order to get to the temple, as the theater was just right on top of the temple itself. Because of this, they had to change their plan. Fitz, Simmons and Trip were going down the tunnels to plant the bombs, while Coulson and May would meet up with Hunter and Bobbi to provide back up. He then instructed Agent Sam Koenig to take his brother, Billy, and to return to the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He was then instructed to implement the Theta Protocol if anything happened to them.

At the lobby of the theater, Whitehall gathered them all together at it was a historic moment. He then tried to understand how Skye fit into the puzzle, and Ward reassured Whitehall that she was insurance against S.H.I.E.L.D. Whitehall then ordered Skye to pick up the Obelisk. After she did so, she and her father knocked out the guards holding Skye. However, in the quick chaos, HYDRA gained the upper hand. Raina (Ruth Negga) then correctly guessed that Ward was there as he was truly in love with Skye. Whitehall then knocked out Cal and tied Skye and Ward up on separate chairs in the basement.

Meanwhile, Coulson, Bobbi, Hunter and May reached the roof of the theater; while Fitz, Simmons and Tripp reached the bottom of the tunnel. From there, they decided not to split up, as they could not use any communication devices inside the city.

While he was being guarded by Agent 33, who still had May’s face on, Ward tried to talk to her and told him that he had once been loyal to someone, but he had turned out to be insane. As soon as Cal woke up, Whitehall demonstrated that he could torture him at varying degrees as he had placed something on his neck that was connected to a wireless remote. He then told Skye that her mother’s special gift was that she didn’t age and told Cal that before he killed him, he would make him watch as he dissected and experimented on Skye. However, they were interrupted by sounds of fighting upstairs. After Whitehall had left, Cal overpowered the guard and told Skye to stay where she was so that he could kill Whitehall. Ward then managed to get both himself and Skye out of their restraints, but before he could move an inch, while his back was turned, Sky shot him three times and went out to find her father.

Meanwhile, after Trip planted the second bomb, he realized that they were running out of time. Because of this, Fitz decided to plant the last bomb.

Cal managed to find Whitehall alone, who then trained a gun on him. Then all of a sudden, Coulson shot Whitehall. This enraged Cal as he had wanted to be the one to kill Whitehall. He then fought Coulson and beat him until he was bloody. He only stopped when Skye, who had come upon them called him “Dad!” She then gave him one chance to leave, which he took. Before he did, he apologized to her and told her that he would always love her. He then told her that he knew that she would come back to him someday because he would be the only person in the world who would understand her after she "transformed," which he claimed was her birthright and was the reason why she was there. He then called her by her real name — Daisy.

Skye then told Coulson that she wasn’t going to let HYDRA get away, successfully putting the Obelisk in the temple. There, she discovered that Raina had taken the Obelisk down. Because of this, she decided to go down to stop Raina. Coulson, who had been found by May, then ran after Skye and told May to clear the area, as he was going to go down.

Meanwhile, Agent 33 was shocked to find that her purpose in life, Whitehall, was dead. She then came upon Ward, and together, they left the theater.

Meanwhile, Fitz, Simmons and Trip had made it back to the top of the tunnel. However, after learning that Coulson and Skye were inside, he went back down to remove the timers so that the bombs they had planted wouldn’t detonate in ten minutes. However, he went down without any protective gear.

Inside the tunnels, Raina saw Mac and asked him to lead her to the temple, where an empty pedestal stood in the middle. Skye managed to find the temple, and before the temple doors closed, Trip, who had managed to stop all the bombs from detonating, managed to enter. However, Coulson didn’t make it inside on time. Mac, on the other hand, stood right behind him and tried to hurt Coulson. After a while, he stood completely still.

Suddenly, without a warning, the Obelisk floated in the air and landed on the pedestal. Afterwards, it opened and released some mist. This caused Raina, Skye and Tripp to turn into stone. Then the Obelisk blew up, causing more mist and dust filling in the entire chamber. Outside, Mac’s spell was broken, and he fell to his knees.

Inside the temple, the stone surrounding Raina and Skye started to crumble off of them. As Raina’s stone shell peeled away, claws, red skin, short dark hairs on her face and a cat’s eye was revealed. Skye, however, after she burst out of her shell, seemed to still look like herself. She then looked in shock at her hands as she seemed more powerful and at the ceiling. The entire tunnel system and temple shook. Outside, Coulson protected Mac, Hunter protected Bobbi, Fitz protected Simmons and May, who was at the basement of the theater, called out for Coulson. Skye then started to cry as she watched Trip crumble down in front of her.

In the after credits scene, a man with no eyes, placed another Obelisk on a box, as it had started to glow. He then called someone up and told that person that there was someone new and that he was onto it.
