“MARVEL’s Agents of SHIELD” Season 2 Episode 16 “Afterlife” aired  on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 9:00 PM. In this episode, S.H.I.E.L.D Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) teamed up with an unexpected ally in order to take back S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Skye (Chloe Bennet). Meanwhile, Skye learned more about the place she was in, which lead to several discoveries. Meanwhile, Leo Fitz’s (Iain de Castecker) and Jemma Simmons’ (Elizabeth Henstridge) loyalties are put to the test.   Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began at a used car lot where Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and S.H.I.E.L.D Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) stole a JEEP in order to go the “Retreat” to retrieve Agent Skye (Chloe Bennet). However, when they got there, they discovered the footage recorded by the camera, and realized that Skye had been taken by the same man who had taken Raina (Ruth Negga) and Calvin “Cal” Zabo (Kyle MacLachlan).

Meanwhile, Skye, after two days of being unconscious, finally woke up to find Gordon (Jamie Harris) standing by her, and discovered that several needles were making her unable to move. However, Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) reassured her that she was safe, as he was her transitioner, someone who would help her transition her body into accepting her newfound powers.

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Agent Bobbi Morse (Adrienne Palicki) assured Commander Robert Gonzales (Edward James Olmos) that Skye wasn’t a monster and that Coulson wasn’t gathering powered people. To know for sure, Robert tried to convince Leo Fitz (Iain de Castecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) to help them open The Toolbox, but Fitz maintained that after he was cleared, he was going to leave.

Meanwhile, Lincoln showed Skye around the mountain they were in, which he called “The Afterlife”, and told her that he was a medical student. He then told her that the people there were waiting and being prepared if they were chosen to have gifts via terragenesis, and told her that she was the only one in a thousand years who had gotten her gifts the “old school way”. He and Gordon then both reassured her that she would be safe there. Afterwards, Lincoln took her to the top of the mountain where he showed her that his power was that he could convert energy into electricity as he was electrically charged. He then told her that a guide would be chosen for her so that she would be able to learn how to control her new gifts.

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) refused to cooperate with Robert and told him that S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson were the same thing. However, he reminded her that Coulson was also now a person with powers because of how he had come back to life, and reminded her of what had happened in Bahrain, and why she had earned the nickname of “The Cavalry”.

Later, after Lincoln slipped up, Skye realized that Raina was there as well, and almost killed her, but was stopped by her new guide, Jiaying (Dichen Lachman), who told her to allow her to train her for a few days before making a decision to stay or leave. Afterwards, Jiaying visited her locked up husband, Cal, and told her that Daisy was there, but that he couldn’t see her.

Meanwhile, Bobbi managed to convince Simmons to help open the Toolbox so that things would turn to normal. She then told Bobbi that they didn’t need Fitz’s help as it was a laboratory program. However, when Fitz learned about it, and after discovering what she was doing, he confronted her, and scolded her, Agent Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie (Henry Simmons) and Bobbi for being afraid of the Toolbox, and held it. Afterwards, he told Simmons that she had succeeded in driving him away and left.

At the Retreat, Coulson questioned himself, but Hunter reassured him that he had confidence in Coulson, and told him that they might have to turn to “bad options” as they had run out of good options. The next morning, Coulson told Hunter that he had called for one reinforcement, and told him that he had triggered the alarm so that S.H.I.E.L.D. would come to get them. He then revealed that he planned to take over a quinjet by disguising themselves as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. However, they were immediately discovered, and were taken into custody. Thankfully, Coulson’s back up, Agent Mike Peters (J. August Richards) arrived just in time to save them.

As they flew out, Coulson told Hunter that Peters had been tracking down Dr. Lizst, a HYDRA agent who was experimenting on powered people, as he might know who Gordon is. Coulson then told them that they were also going to find the one “bad option” who was connected to Skye and HYDRA- Grant Ward (Brett Dalton).

On the BUS, Robert gave May a gun and told her that if she thought he was a traitor, to shoot him. However, she didn’t, and Robert offered her a seat on their board so that Coulson would have a “strong advocate” when he was taken in.

Meanwhile, Fitz got into a taxi and went to the airport. On the way, he praised Simmons as she had managed to smuggle the real Toolbox into his backpack.
