Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) might not be able to recognize his college sweetheart, Elektra, in Marvel’s The Defenders. According to actor Elodie Yung, coming back from the dead will significantly change the femme fatale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Death Becomes Her

Marvel's The Defenders Elektra

Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 revealed that Elektra Natchios is Black Sky, a powerful weapon of the ancient ninja organization called The Hand. Before the series what exactly is the Black Sky and how it will play a role in the story of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Elektra was killed during a fight against Nobu and The Hand. This, however, is not the end of Elektra.

After the credits have rolled, in true Marvel fashion, there was an additional scene that showed Elektra inside the same sarcophagus that brought Nobu back to life. In the second trailer of Marvel’s The Defenders released at San Diego Comic Con, her resurrection was confirmed.

But while Matt succeeded in convincing his ex-girlfriend to stop fighting and lived a good, quiet life by the end of Season 2, she would not be the same person that he knew and loved. Instead, according to Yung, Elektra will become a different person in the upcoming series.

“It was a great idea. I think they got really inspired by the comics. Elektra dies and comes back in a new outfit, and she’s changed,” the actor told Cinema Blend. “It was a really cool and interesting thing to have Elektra again, just being a completely new character. Almost, because she doesn’t remember anything.”

Elektra has always had an evil bone in her, but it looks like Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) will use her loss of her memories to make her the weapon of The Hand. In the trailer, viewers did see the character fighting Daredevil and The Defenders. “So this is where we start,” she continued. “And then Alexandra takes over this new Elektra and forges her the way she wants her to be, if that makes sense.”

The Devil’s Conscience

Elektra’s resurrection and reappearance will throw the Man Without Fear off his game. By the beginning of Marvel’s The Defenders, viewers will see Matt retired from the business of masked vigilantism. A teaser released by Netflix showed Matt in a confession booth, discussing his guilt over losing Elektra.

“Matthew, I wanna talk frankly,” the man on the other side of the screen said. “This other life you led, is your heart still with it? Or is your heart with the one who walked through it by your side?”

The conversation revealed that Matt does not know how to proceed now that (he thinks) Elektra is dead. He thinks that by abandoning the Daredevil, he is also abandoning Elektra and the life that they shared.

Of course, eventually, he would wear the mask again and save not just Hell’s Kitchen, but the entire New York City together with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). He also will face Elektra once again on the battle field, but will this make the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen retreat into an ordinary life?

Fans only have to wait two more weeks to find out. Marvel’s The Defenders will premiere on Aug. 18 exclusively on Netflix. It will also star Rosario Dawson, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Rachael Taylor, Simone Missick, Jessica Henwick, Scott Glenn, Eka Darville, Babs Olusanmokun, Wai Ching Ho and Carrie Ann Moss.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s Daredevil Season 3 has already been renewed by the streaming service. The series will start filming later this year and will premiere some time in 2018.
