Matilda beaten by Kinky Boots at Tonys

The 67th edition of the Tony Awards had a hotly contested fight between Kinky Boots and Matilda the Musical for the top award of the night, the best musical.

At the end, the colorful and crowd-pleasing adaption Kinky Boots won the award. Six awards in all were won by Kinky Boots at Sunday’s show, including best leading actor taken home by Billy Porter. Cyndi Lauper, the pop start won the best original score for Kinky Boots. Other Tonys won by the musical were for sound design, choreography and best orchestrations.

Four awards were won by Matilda including Gabriel Ebert’s best featured actor award, scenic design, lighting design and best book.

In a category that was noncompetitive, Westchester, New York resident Sophia Gennusa along with three other young actresses received Tony Honors in Excellence in Theater.

Pippin, the musical, also won big on the night with four awards including best revival, best featured actress, best lead actress and best director.

The biggest upset of the night went to Tracy Letts when he won leading actor. Most thought that Tom Hanks would win the category after receiving his first ever Tony nomination.

Cicely Tyson did receive her first Tony Award in her long successful acting career for lead actress for her role in The Trip to Bountiful. The win was huge for the talented octogenarian who had not appeared on Broadway for more than 30 years. Tyson appeared in the play with co-stars Condola Rashad and Vanessa Williams.

Neil Patrick Harris, for the fourth time, was host of the awards show.
