With the approximately ten million star wars trailers that are currently out, Daisy Ridley’s face is plastered in the collective consciousness like a giant cello-tape. Ridley portrays Rey, a ‘staff-wielding scavenger’ thrust into extraordinary circumstances in the upcoming “Star Wars: the Force Awakens,” which, even before it’s release, is making waves as possibly the highest grossing movie of all time. But who is Daisy Ridley? Read on to find out.
According to a recent report by the Guardian, Ridley’s first feature film was a college project at the Andover College, for which she was paid her ‘expenses.’ Her second movie is “Star Wars”. Indeed it seems as though the newcomer appeared out of nowhere are rocketed to the top of all the billboards, but Ridley has had a couple so TV appearances in Britain before this.
She was the lead in the film three of “Lifesaver”, which was nominated for the BAFTA British Academy Awards. She has also appeared in the music video for “Lifesaver”, a song by the rapper Wiley. But J. J. Abrams, “Star Wars” helmer, apparently made a deliberate decision to cast a new-comer in his expansion of George Lucas’ universe. As he said himself,
“That’s something I remember loving about the original trilogy: not having seen these people before. It was exciting but also terrifying because we knew that there was going to be a certain level of scrutiny and expectation on who these people were going to be. So they needed to be actors whom the audience could discover as these characters, not as actors they’d seen elsewhere.”
The 23-year-old Ridley, was the perfect compromise of talent and relative anonymity for Abrams, with whom she auditioned six times for the role. According to Ridley herself,
‘it’s a great place to come from. Nobody has any expectations of me until they see the film.”
So what do you think of her addition to the Star Wars pantheon? Let us know in the comments.
