The girl behind the serene-looking beauty is Rosalia Lombardo, a two-year-old Italian girl who died from pneumonia. General Mario Lombardo, Rosalia’s father, hired Salafia to preserve her daughter when she died in 1920. Salafia’s mummification techniques were so good he was able to keep Rosalia’s innocence on her face. She also gained popularity and attracted many visitors because of a phenomenon where she can be seen with closed and opened eyes, which experts explained as an optical illusion.
