In just a few days, the biggest event of the year will finally arrive. Fans in the UK and the world over are very excited for Royal Wedding 2018. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are walking down the aisle on May 19 at St. George’s Chapel. 

Finally, one of the world’s most eligible bachelor is tying the knot. But while people may have followed Prince Harry grow up — from being cradled by Princess Diana to the 33-year-old hunk of a man — there aren’t that much known information about his bride-to-be, Markle. Everyone knows her from her successful stint as Rachel Zane on Suits, but who is Meghan Markle outside of her TV characters? 

In celebration of the newest member of the royal family, here are 5 surprising facts about the soon-to-be princess. 

What is Meghan Markle’s Nationality?

Rachel Meghan Markle was born in and raised in Los Angeles, California. While she is an American, she comes from mixed heritage. Meghan’s mother, Doria, is African-American. Her dad is Duth-Irish. 

Writing for Elle, the actress explained that she is “half black and half white.” However, the 36-year-old actress makes it clear that she embraces who she is. 

“I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

Meghan Markle married Trevor Engelson in 2011

Prince Harry wouldn’t be the first husband of Meghan Markle. In 2011, the actress married film producer and talent manager, Trevor Engelson. The two started dating in 2004. After seven years of being together, they tied the knot in Ocho Rios. While the reason behind their divorce is unknown, the Meghan and Trevor decided to part ways after two years. 

Meghan Markle advocates for education and children’s healthcare

Aside from campaigning for gender equality, Prince Harry’s wife to be also advocates for better education and healthcare for the world’s most vulnerable children. Markle was a global ambassador for World Vision from 2016-2017. 

During her stint as ambassador, she visited Rwanda for humanitarian work. She spent time with the locals and even taught children how to paint. She also visited India to help bring awareness to girls’ lack of access to education.

Meghan is a mama’s girl

Meghan’s parents separated when she was six years old. Since then, she has spent most of her time with her mother to which she is very close to. She is the only daughter of Doria and remains to be very close to her mom. 

In a piece for Glamour, the Suits star called her mom her best friend. “We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend,” she wrote. 

She does calligraphy (what can she not do?)

Even though her dad was already in the entertainment industry as a cinematographer, it wasn’t an easy road for Meghan. She still had to go through the process of auditions to land a role on TV. To make money in between auditions, she did calligraphy for wedding invitations. She learned the art in a handwriting class in school.
