Melissa McCarthy channels her inner James Bond, alongside Jude Law and Jason Statham, in her new comedy film “Spy.”

“Bridesmaids” comedienne Melissa McCarthy will be playing an 007-like character in her new movie, “Spy,” a comedy which also stars Jude Law and Jason Statham. This is McCarthy’s third team up with director Paul Feig, who also helmed her two other films “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat.”

McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA analyst at the agency, who gamely volunteers to be a field agent after one of the department’s suave operatives, Jude Law, turns up missing, and the CIA’s number two agent’s, Jason Statham, identity, as well as those of all the other CIA agents, are compromised.

Allison Janey, one of the agency’s handlers, scouts around for someone who can be “invisible,” and McCarthy promptly volunteers herself to fulfil her dream of becoming a field agent and to get out of her desk job rut.

Donning multiple wigs, McCarthy goes deep undercover, assuming the identity of a divorced Iowa housewife, grumbling about her less than glamorous disguise as she tries to infiltrate the inner circle of a murderous arms dealer, while preventing a disaster of global proportions at the same time.

McCarthy then proceeds into a series of misadventures, involving a recalcitrant scooter, a street fight and breaking the number one agency no-no: initiating contact with a target.

“Spy” presents an innovative take on the secret agent spoof, and while there’s a lot of McCarthy’s trademark physical comedy involved, it’s vastly different from other spy parodies such as “Pink Panther” and “Johnny English” that are headlined by male leads.

This time around, it’s a woman, and an unconventional female at that, who leads an all-star cast of über masculine leading men (Law and Statham) who are eventually found wanting in the competency department.

“Spy” opens in theaters on May 22, 2015 and also stars Rose Byrne and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.
