Academy Award winner Meryl Streep has been tapped by HBO to play the role of Maria Callas in the small screen adaptation of the Terrence McNally stage play “Master Class.” The TV movie will be directed by Mike Nichols. Both Streep and Nichols have previously worked together in the miniseries “Angels in America,” which aired on HBO in 2003. Read further to learn more about “Master Class.”
“Master Class” was first set on Broadway in 1995 with Zoe Caldwell playing the role of Maria Callas, the opera diva. The story traces the training and contribution of the legendary singer at the prestigious Julliard School back in the 1970s. It’s also a celebration of Callas’ life and work.
Caldwell won a Tony for her performance, and the production also received numerous awards for the rest of its theater actors. But when the play embarked on a tour, actress Faye Dunaway was chosen for the lead role, where she received recognition from the Sarah Siddons Society in Chicago. It has been announced that Dunaway was set to star and direct the movie version of “Master Class,” but after many years, this still remains in production. In a report from Indiewire in 2013, Dunway explained the delay of the film, citing problems within her team.
For the TV version, HBO has mapped production of “Master Class” to begin by early 2015, with Streep re-teaming with Nichols since “Angels in America.”
“We are delighted to welcome back the incomparable Mike Nichols and the gifted Meryl Streep, whose collective brilliance shone on HBO with ‘Angels in America’ almost ten years ago,” said Michael Lombardo, as reported on ComingSoon.

Other details of the TV movie have yet to be revealed, but it would be safe to assume that Streep will be able to do the role justice. The actress, a multiple nominee for acting, is no stranger to playing iconic roles of women who have mattered in history. Streep has expertly and flawlessly assumed as Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady” and Julia Child in “Julie & Julia.”
