Michael C. Hall will replace Andrew Rannells for the lead role in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” by Oct. 16, 2014. Read on for further details.
According to Variety, The “Dexter” and “Six Feet Under” star Michael C. Hall will fill in the shoes for the titular role as the East German transgender rocker in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” replacing Andrew Rannells, who replaced Tony winner Neil Patrick Harris who departed the show in August. With Harris in the lead, “Hedwig” became one of Broadway’s strongest sellers, regularly earning million-dollar weeks at seven performances a week in one of the Main Stem’s smaller houses.
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by an East German transgender singer, Hedwig, whose real name is Hansel. The story is told by Hedwig directly to the audience in the form of an extended monologue, exploring Hedwig’s origins, love, heartbreaks and music.
Hall is known for his role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s “Dexter,” which earned him a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the titular role. He also starred as David Fisher on the HBO drama series “Six Feet Under,” in which he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, an AFI Award nomination for Actor of the Year in 2002 and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series along with his co-stars for all five years of the show’s production.
His film credits include “Paycheck,” “Gamer,” “Peep World,” “The Trouble with Bliss” and “Kill Your Darlings.” He has signed to star on a film adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale’s cult novel “Cold in July,” which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Hall will begin by Oct. 16, 2014 and will stick through the entire show until the Jan. 4, 2015, replacing Rannells who will end his streak on Oct. 12, 2014.
