Michael Douglas seems like he is among those actors who wouldn’t mind if the bashers will put a big X to his image when he made a comment about the younger actors in this generation.
The 70-year-old actor is happy to keep up with today’s young generation of actors but not to the point where he could praise them. A lot of things have changed in Hollywood since he started 50 years ago.
In an exclusive interview with The Independent, the actor has spoken out against US actors’ obsession with social media. He claimed that American talent will suffer as consequence of young stars “getting too conscious with their image in social media.”
According to Douglas, there’s something wrong going on with the up-and-coming American actors today- both men and women- because the Brits and Aussie’s are taking many of the best American roles from them.
He also added that clearly, it breaks down on two fronts- in Britain they take their training seriously, in States, the actors are going through a sort of social media image conscious thing rather than formal training. “Many actors are getting caught up in this image thing which is going on to affect their range.”
Douglas also said that Australians particularly with the males, it’s the masculinity while in the US, they have this relatively asexual or unisex area with sensitive young men. “We don’t have many Channing Tatums or Chris Pratts, while the Aussies do. It’s a phenomena.”
He also spoke about how Carey Mulligan had managed to take on the role as a New York school girl, a part which would have traditionally gone to an American actress.
“There’s a crisis in young American actors right now,” Douglas says. “Everyone’s much more image conscious than they are about actually playing the part.“
And when asked about Dustin Hoffman’s interview about the film indutry’s being “worst it has ever been,” Douglas said he understood the actor’s reaction but he still believes that other outlets such as Netflix and HBO are now doing what would have been traditionally done in cinema.
“There’s a lot of good stuff being made in the cable area, good writing there,” Douglas added.
