Miss Japan: The first ever Asian beauty to become Miss Universe was Akiko Kojima. She won in 1959. After 48 years, Riyo Mori conquered the Miss Universe competition recently in 2007.

Miss Thailand: After Japan, it was Thailand that put Asia on the global beauty panorama. Soon after Akiko, Apasra Hongsakula won the tittle of Miss Universe in 1965. Credit came back to Thailand when Porntip Nakhirunkanok won the Miss Universe title at the age of 19 in 1988. Nakhirunkano was one of the youngest Miss Universe Winners.

After six years, Lara Dutta won the crown in 2000. During this eventful year, Indian beauty queens ruled all the three titles: Miss Universe, Miss World (Priyanka Chopra) and Miss Asia-Pacific (Dia Mirza).

In 1988, the Asians dominated the top five when Thailand won the contest. Korea, Japan and Hong Kong occupied the four slots of the Top 5 with Mexico as the exception. Also in 2007, the top five is also subjugated by Asians as Japan won while Korea became the third runner-up.
