Zandrea Bailey finished sixth in the Miss Universe Jamaica 2014 Pageant. After surviving a deadly disease, Bailey vowed to start a battle against lupus on a global scale. Read on to learn more about the brave beauty queen with great mission.

In 2014, 19 hopefuls were competing for the coveted crown and to be given the chance to represent Jamaica in the Miss Universe 2014 pageant. One of them is an extraordinary woman who had survived the dreadful mutilating disease, crippling both mind and body. For almost two years, Bailey, 24, fought with systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

According to Medline Plus,  SLE is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other organs. The disease occurs nine times more often in women than in men, especially in women in child-bearing years, ages 15 to 35, and is also more common in those of non-European descent. There is no cure for SLE. It is treated with immunosuppression, mainly with cyclophosphamide, corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants.

Bailey is raised in a Christian home in Ocho Rios, St Ann. She has a history of the discoid lupus as her mother endured the disease for 23 years.

She graduated from the Trelawny-based Westwood High School and a former student of University of the West Indies (UWI).  She studied political science and philosophy while maintaining an active lifestyle.

In 2011, her friends convinced her to join the Miss Jamaica World Beauty Pageant. However, she did not make the final cut. She was not discouraged by the failure and decided to join again. However, it was postponed due to her condition.

Prior to the diagnosis of SLE, she was wrongly diagnosed with dengue fever.

“I ignored it until one morning I woke up and half my face was swollen and I had a really bad nose bleed. It was then I decided I had to go to the hospital; I knew something was really wrong,” said the Miss Universe Jamaica finalist to Jamaica Observer.

Bailey went home and stayed in Ocho Rios for three weeks as her health condition got worse there.

Tests were conducted that night.  She was told she had to be confined in the hospital because of kidney failure. Then she visited a haematologist the next day in Kingston. Moreover, her blood levels were also low, and she was temporarily crippled.

After three weeks of hospitalization, she was diagnosed with lupus (SLE.)  Still engrossed by her feelings, it was during that time that her advocacy for the fight against lupus embarked on. The gruesome disease has taken her mother away from her.  She revealed that her mother died as a result of complications with SLE a day after undergoing surgery.

Miss Universe pageant has given her a platform through which she can reach out to people throughout the world and spread consciousness about this noxious ailment.
