Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez is surrounded by a controversy which accused her of carpetbagging to win the Miss Nevada pageant. Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez, was crowned Miss USA on June 9, 2014. The beauty queen was indicted of falsely claiming that she lives in Nevada just so that she could participate in the state’s pageant while continuing to live and work in California. Sanchez was taking part in a quiz on “The Todd Show,” on June 16, 2014 when she was asked to name the capital of Nevada and guess what? The newly-crowned Miss America failed to answer the question!

According to Fox News reports Sanchez never in fact moved to Nevada, but continued to work at Disney and live in California. She has set up some documents to appear like she was living in Nevada so that she can participate in the contest .

“Oh, um, ah, oh my gosh,” she circumvented while she tried to answer the question on what the capital of Nevada is.

Out of compassion, the host told her the answer which is Carson City.

“Thank you, I was going to say that! I was like, that one DJ host on MTV, back in the day, his name, that’s how I always remembered it,” Sanchez said, but was also not capable to name the host she was thinking of.  Someone answered, and she said, “Carson Daly, that guy!”

Now Miss USA 2010, Rima Fakih, has come forward defending Miss USA 2014, Nia Sanchez. According to Fakih, Shanna Moakler who is the director of the Miss Nevada pageant, is the one who is responsible for the whole incident.  Moakler, who won Miss USA title in 1995, should be called out.

In 2011, Moakler took over the Nevada pageant after co-directing the Miss California pageant for more than a decade. Moakler has not released any statement on the controversy. Numerous continual requests to her representatives and the Miss Nevada office for statement have not been returned.

According to a pageant insider, Moakler always has a soft corner for Sanchez since she first participated in Miss California years ago.

“Shanna often talked about how beautiful Nia was while she was competing in California,” said the source.

After analyzing this year’s Miss Nevada contestants, it seems that some other past California competitors including: Mary Kate Fitzpatrick, Cierra Jackson, Susan Ramanishin and Brittany McGowan also vied along with Sanchez for Miss Nevada 2014.

The day after the pageant, at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at UNLV, in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Norm Clarke wrote that he received an email from a dissatisfied pageant fan that “California license plates out-numbered Nevada’s in the parking lot” and that “the ‘hoppers’ have taken over.”

However, Sanchez has admitted that she resided in Nevada for about 18 months before winning the state title.
