Strangers Things Season 2 on Netflix will still focus around Will Byers, the child snatched from his home and brought into a parallel world known as the Upside Down. But this time around, fans will see more of Noah Schnapp on their television screens. According to director Shawn Levy, the son of Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) will play a huge role in the upcoming season.

After The Upside Down

After eight episodes, Joyce, with the help of Officer Jim Hopper (David Harbour), was able to rescue her missing son Will from the Upside Down. However, their horror is far from over. Will is still haunted by what happened to him. By the final episode, when he has finally settled back into life with his family, the boy coughed out a slug that triggered a  flashback of the Upside Down.

Season 2 will answer what exactly happened to Will in the Upside Down. At a red carpet event hosted by Netflix, Mashable talked to Levy about the role of Schnapp’s character in the upcoming season.

“When we cast the kids, we cast Noah Schnapp as Will Byers knowing that he was only in a small amount of Season 1 because he was missing,” he explained. “And we cast him because we knew that kid was special. Even if we weren’t going to call on his full reservoir of abilities in Season 1.”

And while Millie Bobby Brown was the breakout actress of Season 1, fans will be blown away with Schnapp’s performance in Season 2.

“Will Byers is very much at the center of Season 2,” Levy added. “Noah steps up in the most staggering way.”

He did not mention what exactly will happen to the young man in the second season, but plenty of theories suggests that he might be becoming a monster himself. His mother did find him in the Upside Down, stuck to a wall and being fed through a tube attached to his mouth. Eagle-eyed viewers pointed out that the scene is reminiscent to Aliens where Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley finds a nest of people the xenomorphs used to hibernate eggs.

But fans would not have to wait long to find out what really happened to Will. Strangers Things Season 2 will drop on Oct. 31 on Netflix.

Stranger Things Season 2 New Characters

Levy also talked about the new characters who will be introduced in Season 2. Finn Woldhard, Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin will reprise their roles as Mike, Dustin and Lucas. Brown will also return as Eleven despite her sudden disappearance after fighting the demogorgon in the first season finale. Ryder and Harbour have also signed up. Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer and Joe Keery will also make appearances.

Stranger Things Season 2 will also introduce Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, Goonies) as Bob Newby, a “former nerd” who went to high school with Joyce. Meanwhile, Dacre Montgomery of Power Rangers also joined the cast as Billy, a new kid who will probably clash with the characters of Dwyer, Heaton and Keery.

Levy assured that the new cast continues to inspire the Duffers as well as himself to make the series better. He pointed out that the characters eventually develop and become important parts of the story mostly because of the brilliance of the actors. Steve, for example, was supposed to be a “sparsely-used” character. However, Keery impressed everyone so he was granted a bigger role.

The Duffers Want Season 3

However, do not expect every question to be answered in Season 2. Matt and Ross Duffer created a 30-page document guide to the Upside Down which means that the creative duo probably has more stories to tell. In fact, Levy revealed that the Duffers had to cut out some ideas from the upcoming season.

“[The Duffers] realized that there was too much story for nine episodes,” he stated. “So one of the surprises was, not all of our grand ideas are going to be serviced in one season […]  the rest go in the back of our head for, hopefully, future chapters.”
