Memorial Day weekend across the U.S., at the box office was predicted to attract record numbers of viewers thanks to the still playing Iron Man 3, Star Trek, and debuting films like Fast & Furious 6. Epic and The Hangover 3.
The all time record for a Memorial Day weekend was broken this year thanks to the aforementioned movies and the quantity of moviegoers that flocked to the cinemas.
Memorial Day weekend has always been very good for the box office, as there are usually a number of summer blockbusters available to see and movies making their debuts that are also expected to be blockbusters. This Memorial Day weekend was no exception with the different titles and genres to choose from.
The No. 1 spot at the box office was won by the Fast & Furious 6, which earned just under $100 million for its debut weekend in the United States. That succeeded in hurting another debut movie The Hangover 3. Even though the third edition of the franchise was given bad reviews, it earned nearly $43 million to place it in second place for the long weekend.
Taking third place was the latest Star Trek Into Darkness that continued its less than par performance at the box office. Despite have good reviews, it has not succeeded in attracting the moviegoer like many had anticipated. The movie earned $38 million over the weekend and moved its worldwide box office receipts to $248 million.
The new animated movie Epic debuted this weekend and took in $34 million to land in fourth place for the weekend. Iron Man 3, continued to earn and surpassed the $1.14 billion mark in worldwide sales after earning $19.4 million domestically during Memorial Day weekend. It is now the fifth highest grossing film ever.
The new record for a Memorial Day weekend will surpass $250 million once all the receipts are counted Monday night.
