The upcoming TV drama “Mr. Robot” on USA Network has picked its lead star. Actor Rami Malek has been chosen to play the lead role on the show, which is already taking shape for next season. Read on to learn more details about this news story.
In July, USA Network announced that it was developing a drama series centered on a hacker who only interacts with people online. Due to a personality disorder, Elliot, the lead character who possesses the sharpest skills as a cyber security engineer, lacks people skills; he cannot properly interact with others. As published on The Hollywood Reporter, Malek will assume the role of Elliot. His character will also find himself embroiled with anarchists in the story, with the group aiming to take down America’s corporate giants.
Malek has had a lot of experience working on television. He was briefly in the top-rating series “24” in 2010, and he was also part of the cast of award-winning miniseries “The Pacific,” which aired on HBO, also in 2010. Malek also starred in “The War at Home,” which ran for two seasons on FOX.
Other than television, the actor also received good breaks doing movies, having starred in “Oldboy” (2013), “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2” (2012) and “Battleship.” (2012). He’s currently filming the latest installment of “Night at the Museum,” where he has been part of since the beginning.
“Mr. Robot,” also classified as a thriller, is produced by Sam Esmail, Steve Golin and Chad Hamilton, with Esmail writing the script to the pilot episode. In August, it was reported that Niels Aden Oplev, the well-known Danish director of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” has been tasked to do the first episode.
“Mr. Robot” joins other upcoming drama thrillers USA Network is considering taking series orders for the next season. The selection already includes “Stanistan,” which will star Jennifer Carpenter and “Colony,” which will be produced by Carlton Cuse (“Lost”).
