According to Deadline, “Finding Carter” marked as MTV’s first dip into the drama genre. It was ordered alongside “Eye Candy,” “Faking It” and “Happyland.” The series was picked up after the arrival of MTV’s new head for script development, Mina Lefevre, from ABC.
The series was created by former “Bones” story editor Emily Silver from a writing sample. Silver will join “Lizzie Macguire” creator/writer Terri Minski on board as executive producers of the series. It was also reported that “Step Up 4” director Scott Speer will lead the production of MTV’s newest drama series.
In twelve back-to-back episodes, the series follows the journey of Carter Stevens (Kathryn Prescott). She may not have a father, but her life is already enough for her. She has a great single mom in Lori (Milena Govich) and Lori’s extended family. The almost “perfect” family she belonged for years begins to crumble after one unfortunate event.
Carter is a wild child who preferred partying and living her life. She attends a party with some of her friends. Unfortunately, the police get a hold of information that their innocent gathering caters more than gossips, games and booze. She is arrested and brought to the police station.
The night continues to be a wild rollercoaster for Carter. She is informed by a policewoman about her real identity. Lori kidnapped her as a child and brought her up as her own. She learns about her real name, and that Elizabeth Wilson (Cynthia Watros) is in fact her biological mother.
Carter has no other choice but to accept the truth. She returns to Elizabeth and her biological family. Her dad, David (Alexis Denisof), is a novelist, who got famous after writing about Carter’s disappearance. She will also join her twin sister, Taylor (Anna Jacoby-Heron), and an estranged brother named Grant (Zac Pullam). Taylor may share similarities with her fraternal twin, but Carter continues to be a wild child. On the other hand, Grant was born around the time of her abduction, and they will bond.
Their family reunion is far away from being an easy one. The time is already ticking. Carter must find the mother she has known before it’s too late. On the other hand, her biological mother is dead set on finding justice and putting Lori inside a cold prison cell.
They will be joined by other recurring characters including Grandma Joan (Meredith Baxter), Grandpa Buddy (Robert Pine), Kyle (Eddie Matos), Max (Alex Saxon), Toby (Stephen Guarino), Gabe (Jesse Henderson), Ofe (Jesse Carere), Crash (Caleb Ruminer) and Bird (Vanessa Morgan).
