The Musketeers Recap: The Accused

“The Musketeers” Season 2 Episode 9 “The Accused” aired last Friday, March 20, 2015 at 9:00 PM on BBC One. In this episode, Milady de Winter (Maimie McCoy) faced Catherine (Marianne Oldham) once and for all after she threatened to kill her. Milady also teamed up with the Musketeers and Captain Treville (Hugo Speer) in order to protect Queen Anne (Alexandra Dowling) and to bring down the Comte de Rochefort (Marc Warren), whose plan against the queen and king, with the unwilling participation of Marguerite (Charlotte Salt), pushed forward. However, while Anne was away, Rochefort took his plot against the queen a step farther, putting Aramis (Santiago Cabrera), Constance Bonacieux (Tamla Kari) and the innocent Dr. Lemay (Ed Stoppard) in the crosshairs. Read on to learn more about this episode.

Right after Queen Anne (Alexandra Dowling) stabbed him in the eye, the Comte de Rochefort (Marc Warren), set his plan against Aramis (Santiago Cabrera) and the queen in motion by showing King Louis (Ryan Gage) the letter that she had written to her brother, the Spanish King Philip, months ago when Louis was in the hands of slavers. Rochefort then took away the Dauphin from the queen and confined her to her quarters, along with Constance Bonacieux (Tamla Kari) whom he accused of planting the idea in the queen’s mind. As they were taken away, and as the musketeers, who put up a fight went back to the garrison, Constance informed Aramis that Rochefort knew everything.

In Rochefort’s private office, he tried to strangled Milady de Winter (Maimie McCoy), who then left him after realizing that he had wanted the queen to himself.

At the garrison, Aramis, with the encouragement of Athos (Tom Burke), revealed to Captain Treville (Hugo Speer), Porthos (Howard Charles) and D’artagnan that he had slept with the queen at the convent, and had fathered the supposed Dauphin. He then told them that Rochefort knew about it.

Milady, who was being followed by Catherine (Marianne Oldham), met up with the musketeers and informed them that Rochefort was a Spanish spy, working for Vargas, and the proof of this was the fact that he had ordered her to kill Ambassador Perales. She then told them that she would help them get the queen to safety, and would help them get into Rochefort’s study in order to get some compromising documents as proof of his treachery.

Later, Milady led the musketeers through the dungeon and helped them distract Rochefort’s Red Guard in order to retrieve Queen Anne. Constance, however, remained behind so that she would be able to keep an eye on the Dauphin.

Later that night, Catherine revealed herself to Milady, and led her to a hovel, where she planned to hang her so that justice would be done for Thomas’ death. However, Milady still maintained that Thomas had tried to force himself on her. Then, before she could push her off to her death, Athos, who was supposed to meet up with Milady at that moment, saved her, and told Catherine that everything was over.

They then entered Rochefort’s study, but before they could read all of the letters he kept in his strongbox, Rochefort entered, and the two hid in the Cardinal’s secret closet. After Rochefort left, the two kissed passionately and Athos took Rochefort’s seal. Athos then told Milady that he wanted to stay at the palace, but Milady warned him that this was all part of Rochefort’s plan.

Rochefort had succeeded in poisoning the king, and told Marguerite not to warn anyone as she would also go down with him. Later, Marguerite asked him to release her from his hold, but he refused to.

The next day, after Rochefort discovered that Anne had fled the palace, he arrested Constance and Lemay, and informed the king, backed by Marguerite, that the queen had plotted with Lemay and Constance to kill the king. Lemay was then beheaded in front of Constance, who was told that she had until dawn to testify against Aramis and the queen.

At the convent, after Athos informed them of what happened to Louis, D’artagnan became worried about Constance, and Anne decided to risk everything and return to the king’s side. Before they left, they got Sister Teresa (Hara Yannas) to forge Rochefort’s handwriting in order to write a letter to Vargas, which would be sent by Porthos, which asked for help as their plan was unraveling. They then sealed it with Rochefort’s seal, which Athos had stolen. They also deduced that after accusing the queen of treason, and getting rid of Louis, Rochefort would have enough power and leverage to seize the throne for Spain.

Back in Paris, before they were led into a trap full of Red Guards and Rochefort, Marguerite begged Aramis to run. Inside, D’argtanan learned that Constance was to be executed, Anne was confined to her chambers, and Aramis was locked in a dungeon cell beside Constance. D’artagnan then was beaten up by the Red Guard as he tried to see Constance to reassure her that he would save her.
