The episode began at the Westwood Hills VA Hospital where one of its patients attacked an orderly and a nurse, and used their scrubs to escape.
At the NCIS headquarters, Los Angeles Police Detective Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) informed his teammates that he was excited to meet his mentee, who was a perfect for him, as he had signed up to become a mentor. They were then interrupted by Technical Operator Eric Beale (Barrett Foa), who called them up to the operations center, where they were told that Gunnery Sergeant Connor Rutman (Troy Mittleider), a Marine Corps Sniper, who was being treated for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, had gone missing after attacking his orderly and nurse.
Deeks and NCIS Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) visited Connor’s wife and teenage daughter, who told them that they had no idea where Connor could be. Meanwhile, NCIS Special Agent G Callen (Chris O’ Donnell) and NCIS Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) discovered several pills in a bag underneath Connor’s mattress. Because of this, Operations Manager Henrietta “Hetty” Lange (Linda Hunt) decided to send in Deeks undercover as a compliance officer so that he could gain access to all of the hospital’s files and logs and so that Kensi could go undercover as a marine sniper suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
At the hospital, Kensi managed to talk to one of the patients, and later told Deeks that she had learned that Connor was close to one visitor whom he had been spending a lot of time with lately.
Meanwhile, G and Sam managed to get a description of the car and the driver that picked Connor up from a homeless man whom Sam realized was a war veteran from Dessert Storm.
After Deeks discovered that there was a discrepancy in some of the inventory logs, he chased down one of Connor’s nurses, Nurse Michael Takahamo (Derek Mio), who later admitted to stealing drugs from the hospital on the outside. He then informed them that Connor had started getting worse after former Army Corporal Mark Simmons (Antal Kalik) began to visit him. Eric and Intelligence Analyst Nell Jones (Renee Felice Smith) then discovered that they were both brought to the headquarters of Protectors of Free America (PFA), a right wing extremist group that fought to eradicate muslim presence in the country. They then also discovered that the drug Connor had been taking was called “the zombie drug”, making it easy for the victim to be controlled.
Sam and G paid a visit to an ongoing PFA protest outside a mosque where a young muslim was shot by a sniper. However, after interrogating the founder of PFA, they discovered that Simmons had gone missing. They later then discovered that Connor wasn’t the shooter as the sniper had been left handed, while Connor was right handed.
However, Nell and Eric managed to track Simmons to a parking lot, but things began to seem off after they were able to easily gun Simmons down after they chased him. After discovering that Simmons was affiliated with Al Qaeda and had killed the young man outside the mosque to stir up anti American sentiment, they realized that they were going to use Connor to assassinate a high ranking Muslim leader. Based on the fact that Simmons met his contact, Mubar Karim, near a cultural center, they discovered that a highly respected mullah named Amare Hassan was going to give an address at the Religious Unity Conference being held at that particular center.
Kensi and Deeks then set themselves up on a rooftop, so that Kensi could shoot Connor if things got out of hand, while Sam and G patrolled the skies. After locating Connor, who was beginning to line up his shot, Assistant Director Owen Granger (Miguel Ferrer) began to order Kensi to take the shot, much to the dismay of Sam, as Sam and G were already in the building of the rooftop where Connor was.
As soon as they got there, G and Sam managed to take out Connor’s associates, while Kensi managed to shoot the gun away, leaving her a little bit shaky.
Afterwards, Sam brought Connor back to the hospital where his family came to visit him.
Back at the NCIS headquarters, much to Deeks dismay, and much to the amusement of Hetty and Kensi, due to scheduling difficulties, he ended up with a mentee that was the opposite of him in everything.
