“NCIS” Season 12 Episode 17 “The Artful Dodger” aired last Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, Anthony DiNozzo, Sr. (Robert Wagner) teamed up with the NCIS team to recover a stolen painting which witnessed two murders, and contained secrets which would threaten national security. Read on to learn more about this episode.

At the NCIS headquarters, NCIS Special Agent Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) properly filed his paperwork so that he could finally go home to make some bread with ATF Agent Zoe Keats, whom he had been seeing. However, his plans were thwarted after NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) brought them all to the crime scene where Lieutenant Dominic Pine had been murdered.

At the crime scene, NCIS Special Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop (Emily Wickersham) discovered that he had been carrying a fancy pen in a box. Dr. Donald “Duckie” Mallard (David McCallum), who had been worried about baby Victoria Palmer’s fever, told them that he had been killed because of blunt force trauma on the head. They also discovered that the place had been accessed, thanks to a reprogrammed radio frequency keycard. However, nothing was missing. Gibbs then gave Tony the rest of the night off, but instead of making bread with Zoe, Tony discovered that his father, Anthony DiNozzo, Sr. (Robert Wagner) was there as he was heartbroken since he had been left behind by his fiance, Linda.

The next day, Tony told NCIS Special Agent Timothy “Tim”McGee (Sean Murray) that Linda had probably left him because he was a con artist. They then suggested that Tony should give him several activities to distract him from his depression, because it worked on Tony.

At the laboratory, Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) informed Gibbs that it was strange that the blood spatter hadn’t hit the frame of the painting, and upon further examination, discovered that the painting, which was supposed to be on loan from the Navy Art Gallery, was a forgery.

As they discussed it upstairs, Tony’s father visited the office, as he had been lonely, and offered to help out as the art black market was a very small world”, much to Tony’s dismay. Senior then put out a word that he was interested in the original painting, and along with McGee, who posed as Tony- the catalogue model, they paid a visit to an art forger friend of Tony’s father named Perry Swan.

Afterwards, Tony vented out his frustrations on Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) who told him to cut his father some slack, as being a father wasn’t easy, and was surprised to discover that Tony thought that he was put together.

Tony then met up with Ellie and Gibbs as the license plates of the getaway car had been found in the dumpster, where Ellie found the original frame of the painting, and the murder weapon – a flashlight.

At the laboratory, Abby discovered traces of another blood spatter which belonged to Brian Khosa, a CIA operative who had been deep undercover with Al Zalim, a Pakistani terrorist group that dealt with reprogrammed radio frequency cards, and who had been killed in the US Embassy at Islamabad.

Back at Tony’s apartment, while Senior checked his email, he told McGee that he thought that marrying Linda would make Tony very proud of him, as he knew that he had been a big disappointment to his son. He then got upset after McGee let it slip that Tony told people that he was a con artist, and that Tony believed that Linda had left him because of that. However, Linda had left him only because she fell in love with an architect who had given her a ticket to Acapulco.

Meanwhile, Ellie and Gibbs learned from CIA Officer Harris (Christopher B. Duncan) that Khosa had been murdered during a mission of Al Zalim’s headed by international fugitive Samir Aziz (Sunkrish Bala), who planted a device in the room of the Secretary of Defense in the US Embassy in Islamabad. Abby then figured that Aziz wanted the painting back as it had the device, a bug, which was inside the painting.

Tony and McGee then paid a visit to Perry, who hadn’t gotten back to McGee as he knew who the forger was-Gloria Hernandez, Pine’s girlfriend, who had stolen the painting for Samir Aziz. After checking Tony’s apartment as Gloria’s cellphone had pinged from there, they realized that Tony’s father had left with Gloria.

Later, they headed to The Adam’s House, where Senior was with Gloria. Gibbs then posed as Senior’s accountant, and was surprised to see Aziz there, as Gloria had decided to hold an auction for the painting. However, before they could start the auction, Gibbs told Senior that Tony, who had paid his hotel bill years ago and had only replied to Gibbs with a look full of love for his father, gave the code word for McGee, Ellie and Tony to spring into action. Later, at the laboratory, Abby recovered the bug in the painting, which was handed over to Officer Harris, who declared that she and Jimmy were heroes.

Afterwards, Senior revealed that he was leaving for another European tour, and told his son that he was not a con artist. Tony then gave him a look full of love, and they reconciled.
