Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with a car containing a dead young woman smashed into the front window of a diner.
The next morning, NSA Attorney Jake Malloy (Jamie Bamber) accompanied his wife, NCIS Special Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop (Emily Wickersham) to work in order to say hello to everyone, and returned a piece of construction equipment to his new “best friend”, NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), which both amused and confused NCIS Special Timothy “Tim” McGee (Sean Murray) and NCIS Special Agent Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo, Jr (Michael Weatherly).
At the diner, they identified the dead woman as twenty five year old Navy Ensign Janine Wilt, who had died just after midnight as her throat had been slashed, which caused her to bleed out.
Ellie and Gibbs then went over to Gorton Polytechnic High, and discovered that she helped out there as a volunteer coach for the basketball team, and that she had left at around 11:00 PM, giving one hour that was unaccounted for. Gibbs then contacted NCIS Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) after discovering that Wilt, whose file had gone dark two weeks ago, worked with the Office of Naval Intelligence.
Back at NCIS, they were informed that she had just succeeded in cracking the system and deciphering the messages of a Columbian Drug Cartel called the Sword of Satan, whose members they had managed to round up. However, Gibbs decided to call in NCIS Special Agent Ned Dorneget (Matt Jones), who now worked in their Cyber Division, so that he could crack Wilt’s computer.
At the morgue, Dr. Donald “Duckie” Mallard (David McCallum) told Gibbs that whoever killed Wilt had used a blunted blade, as the cut was sloppy, and Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) brought some tissue samples up to Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), who was busy examining Wilt’s car.
McGee then informed them that Wilt might have been afraid of Alfredo Montez (Bernardo de Paula), the cartel’s computer consultant whose system Wilt had hacked. However, after bringing him in, they discovered that he wasn’t their guy.
Abby then informed Gibbs that Wilt hadn’t been alone inside the car twenty minutes before she had been killed.
McGee and Ellie then went over to Adem Korkmaz’s (Anil Kumar) house after discovering that Wilt had infiltrated his system. However, they weren’t able to get a warrant to search his computer as the NSA told them to back off as they were monitoring Korkmaz’s dealings with Turkey. This caused Ellie to ask her husband for help, who refused as the NSA had spent years investigating Korkmaz. This caused them to realize that a lot had changed in their relationship since Ellie began to work for NCIS. This also caused her to tell her husband that she had shot and killed someone in Kabul a week ago, which shocked him as she didn’t tell him anything about it.
The next morning, Jake went to Vance, and gave Gibbs Korkmaz’s SST drive, where they discovered a deleted email and link to a chat room. After questioning Korkmaz, he realized that his daughter’s screen name had been listed down. After bringing her in, she informed them that the chat room was full of people who hated the world, and that she had received text messages after she quit the group, trying to get her back into it. She also mentioned that a user named Hellbent427, who had introduced her to the group had been very upset at her leaving. As she went to Gorton and was on the basketball team, she had turned to Wilt for help.
Abby then managed to trace the murder weapon to an old bayonet used in South Vietnam to a collector named Peter Simek, whose son, Bradley Simek (Cody Sullivan) was Hellbent427. However, after paying him a visit, he got into a car and drove off.
Back at the office, Ellie reconciled with her husband.
At the laboratory, Abby discovered traces of gunpowder on his computer tower, and alerted Gibbs after Dornegat discovered that Bradley had printed out a plastic detonator on his 3D Printer.
After pinging his phone, they discovered that he was on a moving bus with children and elderly in it. Gibbs then managed to get the passengers off of the bus while talking him down, where he discovered that Bradley did not kill Wilt. Finally, Gibbs managed to get him to put down the detonator and the bag with the bomb, and tried to get him to come down. However, Brad became distracted as the police pulled up. This caused him to run to the back of the bus, and detonated the bomb, with Gibbs caught in the blowback, as he was just right outside of the door of the bus.
