New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez has had long ties with Dr. Salomon Melgen, a wealthy eye surgeon from Florida. When Menendez’s mother passed away, Melgen was at the senator’s side. He has flown the senator in his private jet and delivered thousands of dollars to benefit the Democratic Party and Senator Menendez.
Menendez has also helped Dr. Melgen as well according to interviews and records, in ways that could be helpful to the successful doctor. Two years ago, despite lacking experience in security issues about the U.S. border, Dr. Melgen purchased a stake in a business that had a contract that had long been dormant to provide port security with Dominican Republic.
Menendez, who chairs a Senate subcommittee that has sway over the DR, urged officials in both the Commerce and State Departments to step in and enforce the contract that had a value estimated at $500 million.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided the offices of Dr. Melgen this week in West Palm Beach, Florida removing boxes and other materials. Now Menendez finds himself trying to defend his relationship with the doctor, while trying to attain his best position of his career as the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
A spokesman for the FBI would not say what the focus of the inquiry was at the agency. An official from law enforcement said there could be many issues that involve Melgen that might come under scrutiny.
Melgen released a statement on Wednesday through his legal counsel that said the government had not yet informed the doctor what its concerns were. However, we are sure the doctor has acted in an appropriate manner always.
