Nielsen’s Top 10 Movies as of January 4, 2015

  • “Equalizer” – This movie was ranked first and is distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. It is an action-thriller which stars Denzel Washington, Martin Csokas, Chloe Grace Moretz and more. The story revolves around Robert McCall (Washington) who has put his past behind and tries to begin a quiet, new life in a lumber mill. He then encounters a young girl who has been forced into prostitution and is tortured by a big Russian mafia. To save the girl, he has to go back into his past life.
  • “Guardians of the Galaxy” – This movie has taken the second place since two weeks. The cast is composed of Chris Patt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and more. It is a sci-fi adventure movie. There is a tint of comedy too. In the movie, a bunch of criminals come together to fight a bigger threat to the universe. In the end, they are able to save the universe. This movie is distributed by Disney/Buena Vista Home video.
  • “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” – It was held in the first position in the previous week but later drops down to the third position. The movie was distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment and stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner. The story is about a bunch of mutated teenage ninja turtles who come out of their shelter to fight against a mastermind who tries to destroy the experiment done by Dr. O’Neil.
  • “Maze Runner” – This film has dropped down from the third position previous week to the fourth position this week. It is distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Its cast members are Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter more. The plot suggests that Thomas is sent to a community of boys after his memory is erased. Soon he realizes that all the boys that have been sent to this community are stuck there forever as there is no way to escape. The only possible way is through the maze, around the walls of the community which keeps changing every day and consists of other barriers.
  • “Frozen” – It was on the fourth place last week, and now it has dropped down to the fifth place. It is an animated, adventure and comedy movie which is distributed by Disney/ Buena Vista Home Video. The movie stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and more. It narrates the story of a princess who has the power to turn anything into ice, and one day, she curses her own home into infinite winter. So her sister teams up with Olaf, Kristoff and Sven to revoke the curse.
  • “Dawn of the Planet of Apes” – It has remained on the sixth rank since the last week. The movie is distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment which stars Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis and others. It is an action, drama and science fiction movie that revolves around the group of apes that try to fight against the remaining human race after a pandemic disease breaks out and kills people.
  • “How to Train Your Dragon 2” – This movie has also managed to stay at the same rank since last week. It is an animated, action and adventure movie which is distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The cast of the movie includes Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler and others. In this movie, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless discover an ice cave, which is a secret hideout of the group of people who track the dragons, capture them and sell them to a mysterious dragon rider. Hiccup tries to get back peace to his people and free all the dragons.
  • “Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” –This movie has remained on the eighth position since last week. It is an adventure and fantasy movie distributed by Warner Home Video. The cast consists of Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and more. The story continues with the group of dwarves, along with Gandalf and Bilbo, who, together in a quest to reclaim Erebor from Smaug, travel far away. Bilbo also finds the mysterious and magical ring during the quest.
  • “Lone Survivor” – This movie has climbed up the rank from 18th last week to ninth this week. It is an action, biography and drama film which is distributed by Universal Home Entertainment. The stars of the movie comprises of Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and others. The plot of the movie revolves around the main character Marcus Luttrell, who, with his team, sets out for a mission to kill a Taliban leader, Ahmad Shah. But later, Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives against modern warfare techniques.
  • “Expendables 3” – It is yet another movie which has managed to crawl up the ladder from 15th position to tenth position this week. This action, adventure, thriller movie is distributed by Lionsgate. In this movie, Barney gathers a team of old and new personnel who battle against the Expendables co-founder named Conrad Stonebanks, who is also an arms trader. As Conrad wants to wipe out Barney and his entire team, Barney, along with some younger recruits, sets to take him down.
