The Odd Couple” Season 1 Episode 3 “The Birthday Party” aired on Thursday, Mar. 5, 2015 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS. Oscar throws a last-minute surprise party for Felix, which runs into problems. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.

Casey (Leslie Bibb) has returned from her work trip and Oscar (Matthew Perry) wonders if they can have another date. The model is experiencing jet lag, so she has to get some sleep. But Oscar convinces her that shaking off jet lag requires indoor exercise with a partner, if you get the hint.

They enter Oscar’s house and find Felix (Thomas Lennon) fiddling with his trusty vacuum cleaner. The neat freak wants to do some serious cleaning to take his mind off some things. He mentions it’s his birthday and the day also commemorates an anniversary. He met his ex-wife on his birthday at a skating rink years ago. He wonders if she’s going to be at the rink today.

Oscar is quite annoyed at how pathetic Felix is once again. He hears a mouthful from Casey, who tells him that he’s being mean to his friend. To show Casey that she’s mistaken, he blurts out that he’s actually throwing a birthday surprise for Felix. She’s impressed and Felix overhears this. He promises Oscar he will act surprise at the party later.

So, without any choice, Oscar rallies his friends and assistant for the party preparations. They manage to come up with a decent one. It was even as none of the guests are Felix’s actual close friends and relatives. They include Casey’s sister Emily (Lindsay Sloane), Dwight Howard from the Rockets, the violinist playing at the subway, Maureen the waitress at the diner, Felix’s accountants and Oscar’s agent Teddy (Wendell Pierce), who brought his young daughter and her friends. They were supposed to have a princess tea party at Teddy’s home.

Casey also arrives, but only to tell Oscar she can’t stay because she has another flight. She only has time to do something fun and crazy in bed, so they leave for her place. Meanwhile, Emily presents Felix her gift, the latest model of his favorite vacuum cleaner, and his face lights up. Dani (Yvette Nicole Brown) notes that Emily took an awful lot of care coming up with her gift, she must’ve a crush on Felix.

Dani, by the way, gifts Felix with a bird. He names her Hope, which also signifies how he’s feeling at the moment. But as Emily demonstrates how the vacuum cleaner works, it sucks Hope inside. Felix helps Emily. They end up shooting the bird out the window with the vacuum. Hope is literally gone.

Dejected, Felix spends the rest of his party with Teddy’s daughters having tea. He’s whining about how his princess got away. Is he referring to Hope or someone else? Emily finds Oscar and Casey to tell them about what’s happening to Felix. He ran off and they have no idea where he is. Oscar cuts short his plans with Casey to follow Felix. He knows exactly where to find him.

At the skating rink, a graceful Felix is gliding on the floor while a much uncoordinated Oscar attempts to talk to him. He’s asking him to go home already. But Felix refuses, believing that his ex-wife will show up. They sit down on the rink and have a serious talk about Felix’s feelings. Did Ashley forget his birthday? Oscar assures his friend that he doesn’t know what Ashley’s deal is, but he’s hardly forgettable. He also confesses that the surprise party was a last-minute thing and he’s sorry about it. Felix thanks his friend because he still made an effort.

In the end, Felix receives a text from Ashley wishing him a good birthday and that was it.
