Olympus Has Fallen showed that there is a market for a movie that involves a takeover of the White House. But it can also mean that moviegoers have seen the first one and don’t want to watch another White House blown up.
A second release between similar movies can sometimes be more successful. Some examples are Armageddon in 1998 and Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012. But those are exemptions and second releases more often struggle in the box office.
Olympus Has Fallen is released 11 years after the 9/11 attacks. People want to see notable structures destroyed once. The White House will be such structure and it will be blasted twice in 2013.
