The Weinstein Company’s “One Chance” is a musical film directed by David Frankel from the screenplay of Justin Zachman. The cast members include Julie Walters, Mackenzie Crook, Jemima Rooper, Trystan Gravelle, James Corden, Alexandra Roach, Colm Meaney and Valeria Bilello. “One Chance” opens in theaters on Oct. 10, 2014. Read on to learn more about the film’s synopsis, including reviews from top critics.

“One Chance” Synopsis:

The film centers on the British Got Talent’s winner, Paul Potts. It is a musical journey on how he struggled to get his way to fame. His mom encouraged him, against the wishes of her steelworker husband (Meaney).

All in all, “One Chance” narrates Paul’s life as a kid, who hides just to avoid the kid who bullies him since grammar school; his cyber girlfriend, whom he was feeling too chicken to meet; his wish to enroll in a opera school in Venice.

“One Chance” Review:

As of this writing, the critics from Metacritic gave the film 51 percent, while 80 percent of the moviegoers would like to see it, as posted on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although Scott Foundas of Variety gave the film a 40 on Metacritic, he particularly commended the performances of Corden and Alexandra Roach.

“What keeps ‘One Chance’ plugging along almost in spite of itself are the warmly engaging performances of Corden… and Alexandra Roach… as the online girlfriend…Together, they’re an oasis of pianissimo in a movie that favors the triple forte,” wrote Foundas in his review in Variety.

Moreover, David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter (THR) also cited Corden’s performance and portrayal of Potts.

“This performance will help kick his career up another notch. Paul is a man with a pure heart, clinging to a dream that dies and regenerates multiple times, and Corden plays this potentially cloying stuff with the ideal light touch,” added Rooney in his review in THR.
