Are Gandalf and One Direction’s Dirty Harry totally BFFs now?
In a report from Vanity Fair, distinguished English thespian Sir Ian McKellen and today’s hottest boy band member Harry Styles showed their mutual admiration for one another on “The Graham Norton Show” with a brief but memorable moment that had the Internet all in a tizzy: a man hug on air.
Both looked mighty pleased as Harry snuggled his curly head on Sir Ian’s shoulder, and the veteran actor gamely pressed back. Toothy, be-dimpled smiles all around.
Multiawarded McKellen, who also plays the iconic villain Magneto in “X-Men,” is currently on tour promoting “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” Peter Jackson’s final installment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy adventure novel. McKellen wore a colorful One Direction T-shirt to the show. Apparently, the legendary actor is a fanboy, having seen the boy band perform on location in New Zealand.
Styles, on the other hand, admitted his “Lord of the Rings” mania included watching all of the three movies in one sitting.
“We were on tour in New Zealand, and they were filming [‘The Hobbit’],” Styles grinned, looking very much like a besotted fan.
"You were meant to come see us filming the day after your final concert, so I thought I would go and have a look at them, see who they are. Very enjoyable. Thank you," McKellen added.
Acknowledging their mutual respect for each other’s craft, the two moved in for a cuddle, to the delight of host Norton, the rest of One Direction, and the studio audience.
“These people were not born when we began ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” McKellen declared, subtley pulling rank, but made up for it by amending, “it’s a big part of their lives, and that’s very, very sweet.” Solemn nods from One Direction all around.
Take a look at Sir Ian McKellen and Harry Style’s bromantic cuddle in the video, wide smiles and all:
Does this mean Patrick Stewart’s been edged out of the picture to be replaced by the younger, dynamic, and infinitely cuter Styles? Your guess is as good as ours.
