According to Deadline, Open Road slates its musical comedy film, “Rock the Kasbah,” starring legendary comedian Bill Murray for a theatrical worldwide release on April 24, 2015. In “Rock the Kasbah,” Murray will play the role of a fading rock ’n’ roll manager who accompanies his only remaining client in Afghanistan for a USO tour.  Abandoned, broke and without his passport, he then discovers an amazing singer in Kabul and manages her through Afghan Star, Afghanistan’s version of American Idol. However, when jealousy gets the better of a disgruntled ex-boyfriend, he decides to oppose the young star with a talent of his own.

Principal photography and production of the project began on June 2, 2014. Shia LaBeouf was added to the cast on Jan. 30, 2014.  Unfortunately, he has dropped out last March 27, 2014. “Rock the Kasbah” will feature musical scores by Yussuf Islam, who was known earlier as Cat Stevens. Open Road obtained U.S. rights during the Berlin Film Festival, with a deal being made by SPWA’s Chan Phung, Michael Helfand and Jon Freedberg with QED’s John Friedberg.

Open Road Films is an American independent motion pictures studio and a film distribution company based in Hollywood, California, specializing in mature audience comedy, action and horror films.

It is produced by Bill Block of QED, Jacob Pechenik of Venture Forth and  Steve Bing and Glazer of Shangri-La Entertainment. Brian Grazer and Tom Freston will be executive producing. The film will be helmed by director Barry Levinson from a script penned by scribe Mitch Glazer. The film is set to hit the big screens worldwide by April 24, 2015.
