Oprah Winfrey is back in the movies after a 15-year hiatus. The talented actress, talk show host and media mogul is starring alongside Forest Whitaker in The Butler. She plays the wife of Whitaker, who plays a butler in the White House for seven presidents, making him the long serving butler in the White House.
The last time Oprah was starring in the movies was in 1998 in an adaptation of Beloved, a novel by Toni Morrison.
Nevertheless, even though Winfrey has not been in the movies in 15 years, she has remained quite busy to say the least.
Her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show became a cultural force on the air. She also appeared in The Color Purple, the movie by Steven Spielberg, for which Winfrey received an Academy Award nomination.
However, her movie roles were second or third to her role as one of Hollywood’s best entrepreneurs and a television icon.
While making The Butler, Winfrey was also running her television network OWN. She was busy trying to bring on board Tyler Perry to produce shows, a move she succeeded in that has been considered a big factor in the turnaround of her network.
For Winfrey she said it was difficult to start acting against following 15 years way. The new film has encouraged conversation regarding racism and many who were in the film have had interviews about personal experiences.
That includes Winfrey who recently was told by a clerk inside a Swiss boutique that she could not see a purse because she could not afford the item, which cost $38,000.
However, Winfrey was sorry that comments she made about the incident in Switzerland became the “news” for days. She said she only was referencing it as someone being somewhere where people do not expect him or her to be.
