Are things changing for Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) in Orange Is The New Black Season 5? Ahead of the series’ return on the small screen, Netflix teased what kind of challenges are waiting for the infamous inmate of Litchfield Penitentiary.
Piper’s Change Of Heart?
Piper has been inside Litchfield Penitentiary nearly over a year now. After five seasons, she is significantly different from the woman that fans met in Season 1. Piper has been fully integrated into the daily routine inside the correctional facility and, soon, she is expected to come out of prison and once again live the life of a free man.
However, her exit from the show might come sooner than everyone anticipated. On Reddit, fans spotted a promo for the upcoming season which contains a very odd description of the show. It said, “Piper Chapman doesn’t deserve her prison sentence. Of course, every one of her fellow inmates thinks the same thing.” Here is a screencap via Elite Daily.
This, of course, comes as a surprise to fans who have followed every event since Season 1. She transported drugs to help her on-again-off-again girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon). Piper definitely deserves her sentence and, over the course of five years, has committed a few more crimes that could definitely grant her an extended period behind bars. The character also voluntarily surrendered in Season 1. She knows what she did and even at one point told her family that she was a criminal.
Many are expecting that something will happen in Orange Is The New Black Season 5 to change her mind. The living conditions inside Litchfield Penitentiary have also changed in the past few seasons. Under a new management, the inmates were treated with a lot less respect that ended with the death of one of the prisoners. The upcoming season is supposed to see the result of all the abuses that the inmates had to endure under the new management that is only concerned with profit with no regard for human life.
Perhaps, this will make Piper and her fellow inmates realize that they do not deserve their treatment inside the women’s prison, However, does this also mean that the character will have to say goodbye soon?
Orange Is The New Black Season 5 According to the Cast
The upcoming season will be tense because the prisoners are in an uprising after the death of Poussey (Samira Wilson) and the constant mistreatment under the new for-profit management. The events will be spread over three days.
Speaking at BUILD (via The Huffington Post), Danielle Brooks and Natasha Lyonne, who plays Taystee and Nicky respectively, talked about the pressure of telling a very important story that affects real people in the U.S.
“The short answer is yes,” Lyonne said when asked if she feels added pressure because of the increasingly more serious themes of the award-winning drama.
“I do feel pressure,” Brooks added. “I’m sure the writers do too at this point, because it’s so important of a topic, it’s not just something you can gloss over and be like, ‘We’re going to patch it up nice with a pretty bow.'”
She added that there is definitely pressure to give respect to the people who lost their lives and the people who lost their loved ones over mistreatment. The show, Brooks explained, is all about “giving voice to those who don’t have a voice, and telling that story even if they are, maybe, imprisoned in other ways.”
Orange is the New Black Season 5 will premiere on June 9 exclusively on Netflix.
