The geopolitical drama series “White City” has found its director. Read on for more details about this development project, which will be coming to AMC in 2015.

AMC has announced, through a press release published on Variety and various news outlets, that Oscar winning director Stephen Gaghan will be tasked to direct the pilot episode of “White City,” the political drama centered on diplomats and journalists based in Afghanistan. The story centers on Jon Liston, who has firsthand experience of the war that’s happening in Kabul. In the pilot episode, Jon will come face to face with a dangerous situation involving insurgent leaders, while going against American embassy protocol. The series will be exploring Jon’s frustration and doubts about Westerners staying put in Afghanistan and his attempts at changing the conditions there.

The upcoming show was inspired from one of its writers and executive producers, Nick McDonell, whose experience as a journalist in Iraq was published in the book, “The End of Major Combat Operations,” in 2010. McDonell collaborates writing for “White City” with John Dempsey, the senior advisor to Richard C. Holbrooke, the U.S. diplomat in Afghanistan, with Chris Mundy (“Criminal Minds”) also taking part as executive producer.

“Nick and John were actually staying at my house, fresh out of Kabul, when they were going around pitching the show. They then went on to write a truly astonishing script. Which got the attention of another old pal, Chris Mundy. It reminds me of Altman’s ‘Mash’ or a great Hal Ashby script. But really, let’s face it, if Coppola was doing ‘Apocalypse Now’ today, it would be an AMC series,” said Gaghan in the press release published on Variety.

In response, Mundy said that they were already dreaming of Gaghan directing the project long before AMC ordered the pilot episode, as Gaghan is familiar with the terrain, as well as have the right energy and passion to match all the rest of those involved in “White City.”

Gaghan is best known for his work as director of the critically acclaimed movie, “Traffic,” which won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2000. He also wrote and directed “Syriana.” On television, Gaghan has worked as writer in “The Practice” and “NYPD Blue.”

And that’s the latest about “White City,” a political drama series coming aboard AMC in 2015. The pilot episode, which will begin production soon, will be helmed by Oscar-winning director Stephen Gaghan. For more about this show and its development, follow Movie News Guide (MNG).
