“Outlander” is an upcoming fantasy series based on the bestselling international book series by American author Diana Gabaldon. It premieres on Saturday, August 9, 2014.”Battlestar Galactica” creator Ronald Moore adapted it for a TV program with Toni Graphia, Matt Roberts, Ira Behr and Anne Kenney. The cast members include Caitriona Balfe (“Super 8”), Sam Heughan (“Batman Live”), Tobias Menzies (“Game of Thrones”), Graham McTavish (“The Hobbit”) and Gary Lewis (“Eragon”).
Deadline is the first to report on the show’s possibility of getting picked up for 16 episodes by Sony Pictures Television and the network, Starz. 50 Cent’s “Power,” “Black Sails” and “Da Vinci’s Demons” will join “Outlander” in Starz’s channel roster.
Starz CEO Chris Albrecht and Ron Moore shared their enthusiasm on working on a show based on Gabaldon’s novels. Albrecht also praised the author and the helmer’s ability to bring the novel’s beloved characters to life for the fans.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to bring these books to life. Diana’s created a rich and textured world filled with intriguing characters, and I believe that Starz is the perfect home for her story. I think we’ll make something that the millions of fans of these books will enjoy and recognize as ‘Outlander’,” said Moore in the Deadline article.
“Outlander” will have the same storyline with the multigenre novel series. It will follow the journey of a World War II nurse named Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe). Claire will learn that she has the ability to travel back in time in another foreign place. She learned about this during her honeymoon trip with her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) in Scotland.
Her adventure in 18th century Scotland will led her to meet Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a young Scottish warrior. Claire and Jamie would be forced in a marriage, but eventually, they would end up falling in love with each other.
After some time, she will be torn with her feelings for both men in different time. She will also meet Frank’s ancestor, Black Jack Randall (also played by Tobias Menzies), who will be Claire and Jamie’s protagonist.
Deadline also confirmed that the cast includes Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh Fitzgibbon (“Game of Thrones”), Steven Cree as Ian Murray (“Maleficent”), Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan and Laura Donnelly as Jaime’s older sister and surrogate mother.
Moreover, The Wrap reported that Ron Moore reunites with fellow “Battlestar Galactica” alum John Dahl. The “Breaking Bad” and “Dexter” director will lead the production of the first two episodes of the 16-episode season run of “Outlander.”
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Tobias Menzies shared his insights on the strong following of the book series. He also shared how the fans are excited to see him in his double portrayal of Frank and his ancestor, Black Jack Randall.
“I think the main thing is that they just feel so passionate about the characters and they want to be reassured that we’re all sort of… [going to] do it properly and do it justice and not sort of betray the characters and the story and the world that they obviously sort of imagined so clearly for themselves,” said Menzies in the Access Hollywood article.
