“Penny Dreadful” Season 1 Premiere Episode 1 “Night Work” Recap:
According to the official “Penny Dreadful” Web site, the show is set in Dublin during the Victorian Era. It showcases the adventures of an elite group of hunters. They are on their quest to solve the mysterious events surrounding the origins of some of the iconic characters in the horror/suspense literature. The show was named after a kind of British fiction that featured sensationalized horror stories. These horror booklets were printed on cheap paper and sold for one penny during the 19th century.
According to Buddy TV, the “Penny Dreadful” Season 1 Premiere Episode 1 “Night Work” (air date: May 11, 2014) began with the quest of Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and an elite medium named Vanessa Ives (Eva Green). They were looking for Murray’s missing daughter Mina (Olivia Llewellyn). She was a character from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” Mina went missing and it was revealed that she was kidnapped by a vampire.
Aside from vampires, the town has been dreading over the news of Jack the Ripper.
Vanessa sought out the help of a Wild West show performer and American sharpshooter named Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). Later, Ethan and Vanessa met up with Sir Malcolm in an opium den. He was given a warning by Murray about the horrible things he might encounter if he will accept Vanessa’s “night work” invitation.
The group found out that the Creature (Rory Kinnear) has tattoos similar to Egyptian Hieroglyphs. It was based on the observation made by a young doctor named Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). He was also invited to join in, but he refused at first. He accepted the invitation to gain money in order to develop cures for one of the rarest diseases.
The team called upon an expert on Egyptian Hieroglyphs named Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russell Beale). Ferdinand told them that the symbols translates into the phrase “blood transformation or blood curse,” which is an excerpt from the Egyptian “Book of the Dead.”
Malcolm was then surprised with an apparition of his daughter, which meant that they are now also being hunted. He later shared it with Vanessa.
Meanwhile, Dr. Frankenstein returned to his humble abode with a large hidden laboratory. A stitched cadaver which was in a vat full of ice has been resurrected due to a large surge of high-voltage electricity.
