Person of Interest” Season 4 Episode 20 “Terra Incognita” aired last Tuesday, Apr.14, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. on CBS. In this episode, while Detective Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman), Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) and Root (Amy Acker) helped prevent a gang war; John Reese (Jim Caviezel) tried to solve one of the late Detective Joss Carter’s (Taraji P. Henson) cold cases, which placed him in mortal peril. Read on to learn more about this episode.

The episode began with a flashback. Harold Finch (Michael Emerson), who had been on a stakeout with Detective Joss Carter (Taraji P. Henson) and John Reese (Jim Caviezel), before he left to feed Bear.

In the present day, Reese and Detective Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman) stumbled upon a shoot- out between two members of the Brotherhood and a man of Elias’ (Enrico Colantini). Reese wondered if the Machine had a glitch as their numbers hadn’t come up. After giving Reese a new number, Reese decided to take care of that number while Fusco and Finch helped stop a gang war.

Finch was then surprised by Root (Amy Acker). It was after informing Finch that she was trying to track down the Machine as well, decided to help them out.

Meanwhile, Reese went to get the file of his new number in the evidence locker. His number was Chase Patterson (Zachary Booth), who had been suspected of slashing the throats of his entire family. He had fled to Paris for seven years before he could be charged with anything. He then got the shock of his life after discovering that the case had been handled by the late Detective Joss Carter (Taraji P. Henson). Before finding the file, which was in her personal effects, he discovered that she had been planning on giving him a picture of him and Jessica Arndt, back when he had been with Jessica.

As Reese went over to the Park Avenue apartment of the Patterson’s, a flashback showed that Carter, who had been a rookie then, had gone there with Detective Raymond Terney (Al Sapienz). There, she told him that she found it strange that Chase, a drug addict, would have left a jade figurine behind as that would have given him a lot of drug money.

Reese then brought Chase for interrogation. He was told what Chase had told Carter before- that he had been relapsing in their cabin in the Catskills, and that he had gone to the apartment to ask for forgiveness when he had found his family dead.

Meanwhile, Finch informed Reese that the Machine was working properly as it had been a crime of opportunity.

On the way to the cabin, Reese remembered that during the stakeout, while turning up the heat inside the car, that he had told Carter that there was no retirement plan for people like them.

Meanwhile, at the cabin, Reese was shot by Gil (Patch Darragh), the real murderer, who had killed the Patterson’s as his and Chase’s father had given him up for the second time. He then forced Chase to drink some pills in order to overdose. It gave him eight hours to live, and brought Reese out into the snow, where he planned to bury him.

Reese then remembered that he had shown Carter the picture of him and Jessica, which made her ask why he had left her. After telling her a story, Carter told him that she didn’t buy it and insisted that he tell her as he was dying. He then realized that he had shot Gil and that he had gotten shot as was currently freezing to death, which meant that Carter was a hallucination.

Carter then encouraged him to get the keys to his car, which wouldn’t start. He then realized that he was truly alone as he had, as usual, had not told anyone where he was. However, both Fusco and Finch were getting worried about Reese’s lengthy absence and at the fact that he had taken one of Carter’s cold cases.

Finally, Reese told Carter that he had let go of Jessica as he thought, based on something that happened in Iraq, that he would be better at his job if he wasn’t fighting “for someone.” Carter then told him that she wished that Reese had told her before, as he usually shut people out. It confused him as he thought that they had talked as Carter had the picture. However, she told him that she was going to give it at the right time and that she liked it as it showed a different side of him. Reese also admitted that he had taken the case to be near her again.

As he began to lose consciousness, while listening to some music, and holding her hand, Carter told him to “hold on” as there were still others who cared about him. After a while, he woke up again and discovered that someone was coming towards him, and also discovered that the passenger seat, where Carter was, was empty.
