Marvel has almost half a dozen franchises making money in the box office. It has several movies in production, which include The Avengers 2, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Marvel Studios has to work with several new talents behind and in front of the camera. Now that it is on Phase Two, people are speculating on whether the studio will continue to take risks. According to its head Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios will keep taking risks because that gave them success in the first place.
Making a successful movie franchise based on a very popular comic book hero is hard to accomplish. A Hollywood superstar and good marketing strategy could bring in big bucks during the opening weekend, but to have a lasting success is hard to get.
DC failed with its Green Lantern adaptation and it needed to refresh its biggest property with Man of Steel. This is the opposite of the success of Marvel in churning out one winner after another. Its most recent release, The Avengers, topped last summer’s box office. It has been named as the best superhero movie to date and ended Phase One of the studio’s plans.
The success of Marvel Studio’s Phase One movies was due to some bold decisions made by the company. It dedicated a large portion of Iron Man 2 to introduce the S.H.I.E.L.D. to movie goers. Marvel also gave Joss Whedon, who is considered un-bankable by some insiders, the rein to its biggest movie franchise.
This would also be true to Phase Two. James Gunn has twisted ideas for Guardians of the Galaxy. People are already speculating on whether the movie will be loyal to the comic book or not. People are also anxious as to who Marvel will cast as voices and actors in the movie.
