In an interview with MTV, “The Lego Batman Movie” helmers and co-writers said that the spin-off film will explore a whole new aspect to the character featured in the original “Lego” movie. Moreover, Lord added that the spin-off will feature “some very stellar action scenes.”
“No spoilers, But I will say I think the movie is really exciting because it’s about ‘Can Batman be happy?” Lord said in the MTV interview.
Set for a 2017 release, “The LEGO Batman Movie” is a direct spin-off of the “LEGO Movie” starring the dark knight who was featured in the original pic as quite brooding and cocky. With the character’s popularity in the said pic, Warner has decided to bring back the character to star in his own pic. Will Arnett, who voiced Batman in the original LEGO pic, will be returning to reprise his role while Chris McKay, who served as animation supervisor on “Lego Movie,” is set to direct the spin-off feature from a script being written by author-screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith. Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will also be producing the pic.
Besides “The LEGO Batman Movie” WB has also slated two more LEGO pics, “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” and the “The Lego Movie” sequel, which will be set 4 years after the original. “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” is slated for a Sept. 23, 2016 release. Based on the LEGO kit set of the same name, which also got its own TV series on Cartoon Network, “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” will be set in a very different universe which is far from what was established in “The LEGO Movie.” Charlie Bean, who produced Disney’s “Tron: Uprising,” is set to direct the pic from a script by the Hageman brothers, Dan and Kevin, who penned for the cartoon series “LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu” and co-wrote the story for “The LEGO Movie.” Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce.
Meanwhile “The LEGO Movie 2” is scheduled for release in 2018 with both Lord and Miller returning to write, however, it is not confirmed yet if they would also direct for the sequel as they did with the original film.
