The episode began in the forests of Amercia during the American War of Independence, where it was revealed that Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), had enlisted as he was supposed to be hung for starting a fight. They were then ambushed by American rebels, and as he got knocked unconscious, he remembered his true love, Elizabeth Chynoweth (Heida Reed)
Two years later, in a stagecoach returning home to Namapara, his father’s estate, he learned that his father had died. He, therefore decided to pay a visit to his uncle, Charles Poldark (Warren Clarke), and his cousin Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller), only to discover that Francis was engaged to Elizabeth, who became conflicted to see him. The next day, Charles decided that his son and Elizabeth should get married next week. Francis, at first was worried that Elizabeth would leave him for Ross, but she told him that he had nothing to be worried about.
Meanwhile, Ross came home, and examined his father’s lands, which were in ruins. He woke up Prudie (Beatie Edney) and Jud Payneter (Philip Davis), his father’s old servants, and instructed them to start cleaning up the place. However, his friends and his father’s tenants welcomed him back, and told him that they were more than willing to help him out for free. He also met with his father’s old friend and banker, who told him that everything had been mortgaged, and that he was currently drowning in debt.
Everyone, however, was amazed at Ross, as it seemed like the war had changed him into a more serious man. Meanwhile, Ross’s old schoolmate, a social climber named George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) and his uncle schemed to help Ross so that he would owe them, and this would give them more opportunities to do business as the Poldark name was an old one. However, every time George tried to approach him, Ross turned him down.
Meanwhile, Ross continued to work the land, much to everyone’s surprise. After Verity Poldark (Ruby Bentall), his cousin, informed him about the wedding date of Elizabeth and Francis, Francis came over to talk to Ross. They both went inside one of Ross’ two mines to examine it, and Ross expressed his frustration over the fact that Francis wanted Ross to come to the wedding in spite of his history with Elizabeth. Because of this, he accidentally pushed Francis into one of the pools of water inside, and hesitated before rescuing him.
After the wedding, Ross made it clear to Elizabeth that he respected her decision, and after drinking that night, he threw away the ring that she had given him before. That night, their great aunt read her tarot cards, which told her that “the stronger Poldark will rise as the weaker falls, for all is fair in love and war”. Because of this, Charles tried to persuade Ross to leave as there was nothing left for him in Cornwall, but Ross refused to leave.
The next morning, during market day, Ross pawned off his father’s watch to buy supplies, and stopped the crowd from hurting a girl, named Demelza Carne (Eleanor Tomlinson), dressed in boy’s clothes. He fed her, and decided to hire her as his kitchen maid, since her father often beat her up at home.
The next morning, he went over to his uncle’s house as he had left him several large bank notes. He then encountered Elizabeth, who told him that she thought that he hated her. After confronting her with the fact that he had been faithful to her while he was away, she told him that she loved Francis and that she had thought that he had died.
However, when he got back home, he discovered that Demelza’s father and his entire village had come to get her back. He then fought them off, while Jud and his tenants fought off the villagers. He then told Prudie that Demelza, who had been hiding in the cabinet, should leave, and went to make sure that Judd and the others were alright. Afterwards, he brought her back home, and encountered Elizabeth who told him that she thought he was leaving for London. However, he told her that he was staying, and later told Demelza that he was staying because of his inheritance – his land.
