Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) smuggling letters from Captain Andrew Blamey (Richard Harrington) to Verity Poldark (Ruby Bentall).
In town, Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller) wished that his cousin, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), would have good luck with his new smelting company. He managed to see the names of the shareholders of the Carnmore Smelting Company.
Meanwhile, Ross, who warned Judd Paynter (Phil Davis) not to take any of his rum as he lugged a barrel back to the house, warned Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) to be a little bit more prudent. It was because Mark Daniel (Matthew Wilson), Keren Smith’s (Sabrina Bartlett) husband, was getting suspicious that Keren was being unfaithful to him. She was often at the doctor’s house as she had insisted on being his assistant.
At Nampara, after Ross caught Judd saying disgraceful things out loud in the house as he was drunk on Ross’ rum, Ross threw Judd and his wife, Prudie (Beatie Edney), out. He also learned that they could no longer use the Tressida Mill in to cut and grind the copper. The Warleggan’s began to bankrupt him, as he owed them some loans.
Meanwhile, while Francis, Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed) and little Thomas went out for a walk, Verity snuck out of the house to elope with the captain. He was whom she was going to marry the next day, and left behind a letter to their old aunt.
Enraged, Francis learned from one of his servants that Demelza had been bringing the captain’s letters to Verity. It was instantly concluded that Ross had orchestrated everything. They were then interrupted by George Warleggan (Jack Farthing). He had dropped by to apologize for his cheating cousin’s misconduct towards him as he had cheated him at cards, and told them that the Warleggan bank was going to cancel some of their debts, and would also give them twelve hundred pounds.
After a few drinks, George took advantage of Francis’ annoyance towards Ross to talk about the folly of the Carnmore Company. Francis then ended up telling George the names of the company’s shareholders.
Meanwhile, after Demelza decided to hide the deed of Carnmore si that the Warleggans would never find it, Ross rushed to the mine as there had been a cave-in. However, Enys and Keren were nowhere to be found. She had decided to come unto him, which resulted in the two sleeping together.
Afterwards, Mark confronted his wife and discovered that she had been with the doctor. She then began to blame him and started hitting him. Mark then tried to stop her, and in doing so, accidentally snapped her neck, which caused her death. Ross then tried to persuade Enys to leave, but he refused. He wanted to face Mark as he knew that he had also wronged him, and because he didn’t want to abandon his patients there.
Paul then arrived with Mark, whom they persuaded to escape using Ross’ boat in the cove that night. After they left, the guards came looking for Mark. However, Ross claimed that he didn’t know where Mark could be.
After receiving news of Verity’s elopement, Ross went to Trenwith, where he was shouted at by Francis. He refused to listen, and insulted Demelza. This caused a definite rift between the two cousins, even though Elizabeth tried to intervene.
Meanwhile, at Namparra, things became complicated as Enys and Mark found themselves under the same roof, but Demelza managed to calm the down. Ross and Paul then helped Mark escape and fought off some of the means. It was before he returned home and showed the captain of the guard that he had been in bed the entire time.
The next day, Verity got married and Ross went to a very strange company meeting.
When he returned, Demelza told him that she had gone to see Francis. He had admitted that she had been the one who had brought them back together, and had been their messenger for around three months. Francis then had told her that she and Ross weren’t welcome at Trenwith anymore. Demelza didn’t understand, as she just wanted Verity to be happy. Ross realized that this was related to the fact that at the shareholder’s meeting, everyone had withdrawn from the company as they had been bankrupted by the Warleggans.
Demelza then asked for forgiveness. Ross told her that he would try to give as she couldn’t have foreseen what had happened as a result of Demelza keeping her involvement with Verity and the captain a secret from Ross.
