In this episode, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) and Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) raced against time to save Jim Carter (Alexander Arnold) from jail before it was too late. Because of this, Ross took it all out during the Warleggan’s ball, the first ever ball that Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) attended. Meanwhile, the Warleggans schemed against Ross’ new smelting company, rumors circulated about Mark Daniels’ (Matthew Wilson) cheating on him. Verity Poldark’s (Ruby Bentall) plans seemed to fall through as her brother refused to accept Captain Andrew Blamey (Richard Harrington). Read on to learn more about this episode.
While Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) comforted Jinny Carter (Gracee O’ Brien), as her husband was going to come home soon, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), greeted Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller). He was busy tending his fields, before heading out to town for his smelting company’s first copper auction.
At the auction, much to the annoyance of South Wales Smelting Company. It was backed by the Warleggans, Ross’ cooperative, the Carnmoore Smelting Company, succeeded in getting most of the copper.
Meanwhile, Keren Smith (Sabrina Bartlett) is unhappy with her marriage to Mark Daniels (Matthew Wilson). He decided to deliberately injure herself so that Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) could tend to her sprained hand. After a while, as people started to talk, since she kept on going to his room to ask for a medicine, Demelza tried to talk to her to no avail.
While Ross was in town, Verity Poldark (Ruby Bentall) met up with Captain Andrew Blamey (Richard Harrington). He told him that they shouldn’t be seen together at the ball, and promised to talk to Francis about their future plans.
The next day, while Demelza practiced her dance steps in the field, Ross got Dwight. Together, late at night, they broke Jim Carter (Alexander Arnold) out of jail, as he was very sick, and had an arm that was infected by gangrene. However, despite their best efforts, Jim died, which caused Ross to drink more. He then told Demelza that they weren’t going to attend the ball anymore. It was despite the fact that he had just had her new dress sent to her. He decided to go as Verity reminded him that he needed to remind the aristocrats that he was angry at. He was a gentleman so that he wouldn’t also end up in jail.
At the ball, Demelza was surprised that Ross had given her a beautiful new necklace. She was even more surprised as almost every gentleman in the room wanted to dance with her.
Meanwhile, Ross and Francis ended up heading towards the game room. They drank while they played cards against Reverend Halse (Robin Ellis) and Matthew Sanson (Jason Thorpe). During the game, Ross was rude towards Reverend Halse. He promised that they would talk to him soon about what he and Dwight did the other night.
After Francis went out to catch his breath, he ran into Verity who was trying to usher Blamey. He had suddenly arrived, out. Francis then tried to hit him, but was stopped, and forbade Verity to see Blamey again.
Because Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed) reminded Ross and Francis that they should remember to take care of their wives, Ross went over to Demelza, and fought with her as she was trying to talk some sense into him.
Because of this, he went back and staked his pocket watch and Demelza’s necklace against Sanson, but he kept on losing. Finally, after he staked his shares at Wheal Leisure, he showed everyone that Sanson had been cheating, and grappled him before letting him go.
The next day, Francis warned him that things might go so well for him as Sanson was George Warleggan’s (Jack Farthing) cousin, and because some of the magistrates, who were on the Canmore board might have taken offense as to what he had done regarding Jim Carter.
When they got home, Ross comforted Mark, who had begun to hear the rumors. Meanwhile, Demelza received a letter from the captain. He told her that Verity would now have to choose between him and her family.
At Dwight’s cottage, Keren forced herself inside and insisted that she work as his nurse as payment for his treatment.
The next day, Ross, who was finally sober, attended Jim’s funeral. Demelza then comforted him. She told him that he had done everything that he could have done, and that all that he could really do now was to make sure that their home would be bright and cheerful- their own little corner of the world.
