Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began with Demelza Poldark (Eleanor Tomlinson) baking bread while singing. Afterwards, she and Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) gave out some bread to the miner’s children at Wheal Leisure.
The next day, as Ross began to ride out to town, he saw Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris). He informed him that everyone, from the family to the servants, except for old Aunt Agatha (Caroline Blakiston), had succumbed to the latest epidemic of putrid throat, or diphtheria. After deciding not to enter Trenwithe as Dr. Choake (Robert Daws) had just been there to treat them, Ross decided to head out to town. It is where the copper auction was going to be held.
However, as they were outbid by George Warleggan’s (Jack Farthing) smelting company, they had to dissolve Carnmore Smelting Company. He then went to his banker, and asked for a loan of 1,000 pounds. It was even though he already had a debt of 900 pounds, and stubbornly refused to sell any of his shares of Wheal Leisure to the Warleggans. Later, George confronted him to inquire why Ross didn’t like him so much. Ross told him that it was because he used greed and exploitation to become rich.
Meanwhile, Demelza, after hearing that there was no one to take care of Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller), Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed), and their little boy, decided to spend the night at Trenwithe to help them out. There, Francis forgave Demelza for helping Verity Poldark (Ruby Bentall) elope with Captain Andrew Blamey (Richard Harrington).
The next morning, Ross came home. Demelza told Ross that she had tended to Francis, Elizabeth and little Geoffrey Charles. Later that night, after Demelza began to complain of a swollen throat, Ross ran to Enys. He later told him that little Julia and Demelza had diphtheria.
While Enys stayed with Julia, Ross tried to comfort Demelza. She began to refuse to drink anything as she started having hallucinations that her father, Ross, and Elizabeth were taunting her.
The next day. Ross stayed with Julia the entire night. Ross and Enys buried little Julia, who had died in the night. Afterwards, Ross stayed by Demelza’s side. He told Enys that he felt bad that he hadn’t been able to give all the mourners some food and drink.
Afterwards, as per Enys’ advice, he went out for a walk. As he looked out to the sea, he saw that Queen Charlotte, George’s ship, was now a wreck. Because of that, he rounded up the entire village and helped everyone salvage the cargo on the boat, as whatever washes ashore on their beach becomes theirs.
George and his uncle realized that their ship’s cargo washed up on Poldark land. He immediately bribed a soldier to take anyone who plundered the ship in. By nightfall, Ross instructed his men to begin leaving as miners from a different town were coming. Once they came, they started drunken fights in order to get some of the cargo. Ross then saw that Matthew Sanson (Jason Thorpe), who was on the boat, had died and offered shelter to the survivors.
At home, Ross was surprised to see that Elizabeth was tending to his only love and reassured Demelza that Elizabeth would never take him away from her. After asking about Julia, Ross told her that their daughter had passed peacefully while she was recovering.
The next day, at Trenwithe, George told Elizabeth that he didn’t wish to be understood anymore. She told him that he wouldn’t take any man’s side, which disturbed Elizabeth. At the beach, Ross told George that he wouldn’t have saved his cousin, as he had never given him and his family any mercy.
Ross then brought Demelza to Julia’s grave by the cliff. She released Julia’s ribbon to the wind. He then praised her goodness as she wanted him to reconcile with Francis. He then told her that he would invite him to join Wheal Leisure so that they could resurrect the Poldark mines. They were then interrupted as Ross was arrested under George’s orders.
