BBC One’s most recent adaptation of the timeless “Poldark” saga, written by author and novelist Winston Graham, took the world by storm as it swept audiences into the Cornish countryside and into the homes and hearts of Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), and his cousin, Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller). Thankfully, with another season on the way, and which just began production, several interesting tidbits were recently shared as to what to expect in the upcoming second season. WARNING: This article will contain spoilers regarding the second season of “Poldark”. Read on to learn more about what to expect for the second season.
The “Poldark” clan, specifically Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) gained a place in the hearts of many viewers around the world. The audiences faithfully followed the story of the roguish captain determined to resurrect his late father’s mine, and along the way, ended up falling in love with a very unexpected woman.
Audiences then followed as the couple, Ross and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) and the rest of the Poldark clan struggled through sickness, death, and poverty as things became harder and harder for mine owners in 18th Century Cornwall.
However, tragedy wasn’t done yet with the Poldark clan as external forces were determined to go against Ross. He ended up getting arrested after suffering a tragic loss, leaving fans and viewers to wonder what is in store for the Poldarks in the upcoming second season.
According to the official BBC blog, “Poldark” writer and executive producer Debbie Horsefield has recently informed viewers and fans of “Poldark” that the second season will be based on the third and fourth books of the “Poldark” saga by Winston Graham, on which the series is based, entitled “Jeremy Poldark” and “Warleggan.”
Jeremy Poldark, is of course, Demelza and Ross’ first son and second child, and Warleggan, as most “Poldark” fans know, is the surname of Ross’ rival, George Warleggan (Jack Farthing). His family runs the bank that is continually bankrupting the rest of mine owners in the name of modern progress.
This means that most of the characters from the first season, according to BBC and Spoiler TV, such as Elizabeth Poldark (Heida Reed), Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller), Verity Poldark (Ruby Bentall), George Warleggan (Jack Farthing), Prudie Paynter (Beatie Edney), Jud Paynter (Phil Davis) and Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) will be back.
Joining the cast for the second season are actor John Nettles, who will portray the wealthy landowner Ray Penvenen, and Garbriella Wilde, who will portray Ray’s niece, who ends up crossing paths and falling for Dr. Dwight Enys (Luke Norris).
According to BBC, both Ross and Francis will have to join forces in order to save their family’s mines, but Elizabeth’s and Ross’ past might become a hindrance to this alliance. This will not bode well for Ross as the Warleggan’s, in the chaos of the ongoing riots and revolutions prevalent at the time, are more than ever determined to get him hanged.
