Lily James, Sam Riley and Bella Heathcote have landed a role in the long-awaited adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 parody novel, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” Read on for more details on the story.
Deadline has reported that “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” has been seeking for a big screen incarnation since the parody mash-up novel by Seth Grahame-Smith has been published in 2009. The project has gone through a lot of directorial changes that seemingly puts a halt for production, but this is not the case anymore. The project is being pushed through with principal photography to start by September. Cross Creek Pictures has acquired domestic rights for U.S. distribution, casting Bella Heathcote to play the lead role. Along with Heathcote are Lily James and Sam Riley. “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” is a parody of Jane Austen’s 1813 classic novel “Pride And Prejudice,” combining it with elements of modern zombie fiction.
The international best seller “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” is set in an alternative universe version of Regency era England and will follow the plot of “Pride and Prejudice,” except for the occasional zombies that roam the English countryside described as “stricken,”, “sorry stricken,” “undead,””unmentionables,” or just “zombies.” The deceased are generally viewed by the characters as a troublesome, albeit deadly, nuisance. Their presence alters the original plot of the story in both “subtle and significant” ways: Messages between houses are sometimes lost when the couriers are captured and eaten; characters openly discuss and judge the zombie-fighting abilities of others; women weigh the pros and cons of carrying a musket as it provides safety but is considered “unladylike.”
Director and screenwriter Burr Steers, who has worked on titles such as “Igby goes Down,” “Charlie St. Cloud” and “17 Again,” will be directing the said project, with David O. Russell penning the screenplay.
Brian Oliver, Allison Shearmur, Sean McKittrick, Natalie Portman, Annette Savitch, Tyler Thompson and Marc Butan will be producing the film under Sierra/Affinity’s banner, which will also handle the foreign sales.
Portman, with her team, has been aboard as producer and, at a point, was to star in the project only to drop out later. Lily Collins has been revealed for the lead in 2013. With new cast added, James will be portraying Elizabeth Bennett, Heathcote as Elizabeth’s sister and Riley as Mr. Darcy. The novel is centered on the relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Jack Huston is also in talks to join.
That’s it for “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” with Sam Riley, Lily James and Bella Heathcote joining the cast. For more updates on celebrities and upcoming movies, stay tuned here on Movie News Guide (MNG).
