Randy Travis, a star of country music, who in February entered a plea of no contest for public intoxication after the Super Bowl, was arrested on Tuesday. Travis was arrested after police found him naked and smelling of alcohol while lying on the road in a remote section of Texas.
Authorities arrested Travis and charged him with felony retaliation and driving under the influence. The retaliation charge came after Travis allegedly said he would fatally shoot one of the highway patrol who had responded to a call made by a concerned citizen. The caller said a man was lying in the middle of the road. The DUI is a misdemeanor, while the retaliation charge is a felony.
While Travis was in the custody of law enforcement officers, he said he would shoot and kill the officers working the case. Travis, who is 53, is alleged to have refused to take a breath and blood test. He was later forced to take a blood test due to a judge’s order.
Travis had been driving a Trans Am when it went off the road near Tioga. It struck a number of barricades within a construction zone, said the Highway Patrol. Officers said Travis had been the only occupant in the car and when they found him, he was completely naked. He was still naked when he was brought to the county jail around 3 am.
Travis had his bail of $21,500 posted by a friend of his on Wednesday morning. There were no reports whether he was injured in the accident, but his mug shot showed a bruised eye and abrasions.
